RECORD MAILS.
BUSY DAY AT POST OFFICE. A record mail arrived in Christchurch yesterday from England via San Francisco, and it was not until 9.80 last evening that tho postal officials finally succeeded in Borting it after a most Btrenuous day's working in the heat. Yesterday's mail comprised 1460 bags, aud in addition 3SO more bags of parcels, the balance of the English and American mail, are to arrive to-day, in addition to a small Australian mail. The registered letters received yesterday alone numbered 3000. The letters and parcels by yesterday's mail which were not delivered yesterday will bo sent out by the first delivery this morning. It was only on Tuesday that an earlier English mail of 435 parcels was received. The parcels business has been greatly increased of late through the practice having been adopted generally of sending merchandise througii tho parcels post. Especially are large numbers of tyres for motor-cars lofwarded in this way. At Christmas time, when shipping was held- up, no fewer • than 65 bags of tyfes, each bag containing three, were sent from Christ- , church to various North Island centres. For the past week the General Post Office at Wellington has been inundated with oversea mails, and iho staff has been working day and night endeavouring to distribute the acci/uulation. which has resulted from the shipping shortage. It is stated that never in the history of New Zealand has there been such an accumulation of mail matter, nor has one vessel before brought! so much mail in one trip • as the Moana did this week.
