DRAINAGE BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Drainage Board mot last night. Pre- | I6nt—Messrs F. Burgoyne, S. C. Bingham, F. Storey, \V. J, Walter, S. A. Staples, H. j Holland, Charles Hill, H. J. Otley, and J. Down. An apology for the absence of Mr "Walter Hill, the chairman, was received, •nd Mr Otley was voted to the chair. The TVorks Committee recommended that the applications of Messrs Smith and Congreve to have portions of Free's Creek inverted be granted, both applicants to pay tho cost of the work. The report waß adopted. * The engineer reported that a break in the deep sewer in Durham street, near Chester street, duo to quicksand, occurred sinco last meeting, and repsirs had been effected. He had examined the brick settling ponds recently erected by the Woolston Tanneries, which he thought would prove satisfactory, but further efforts were beiug made to en- J sure still better results. He presented a sample taken the previous day. The somewhat milky appearance of this was due solely to the presence of lime. The report was adopted. The District Health Officer (Dr. H. Chcsson) wrote regarding complaints received respecting Robson's wool works. Ho asked what action the Board had taken, aud added that, if the effluent were not purified there would be nothing left but to take action. The engineer had replied that, on September 23rd, 1918. the Board hud written to Mr Robscm, asking him to bring the effluent from the works tip to the Board's standard. The engineer was instructed to report on the matter at the Board's next meeting. The New Zealand Glue Company wrote, stating that a sample of the effluent from their works was not a fair sample, andasked that whan a sample was taken thev should be informed. It was decided that when the inspector went to take a sample he should inform the company. Mr J. L. Vergette wroto asking permission to covcr a portion oi the open drain in Heaton street, Mcrivale. Permission was granted on certain conditions. ,An application • on behalf of St. Bede's College, North road, Papanui, to connect «. septic tank with Kruse's drain, was declined, the inspector reporting that the drain" teferred to was not suitable. Mr A. G. ; Fischer was granted permission to cover a 'portion of Bing's drain, on certain conditions, . The matter of the annual inspection of the Board's iarm was left to tho chairman to arrange.
