(By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright."* (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) ROME, January 17. The Chacuia, convoying 650 passengers from Marseilles to Athens, was proceeding at full 'speed in moonlight, when she struck a floating mine 50 miles off Messina lighthouse.
The explosion blew the forepart of tho vessel into the air. Most of the passengers perished in their bunks. A British steamer dashed to the spot and saved . 100 people, many of whom were injured. A wireless message was sent for other help.
