The War Memorial.

The Building Committoo of the Returned Soldiers' Association we venture to think have done a- very wise thing. They gather that the general desire of the people of Canterbury is to have a symbolical memorial of tho war, conceived on largo and generous lines, something in the nature of the Hall of Memories which they proposed in connexion with the Soldiers' Club, but on a larger scale. They realiso that if the Hall of Memorieß is proceeded with, it may have the effect of crippling or perhaps killing altogether the larger scheme. They have therefore decided to give up the idea, of the Hall of Memories and confine their efforts to building a soldiers' club, at a cost of £8000. They prdmisc to support the movement for memorial provided that it is symbolical of the part played by our men in the war, and provision is made for recording the names of those who have fallen. We think their action in this matter will be very generally approved, and that they will find subscriptions coming forward much more freely for the club now that the somewhat incongruous adjunct originally proposed is not to be proceeded with. The way having thus been cleared, we suggest that a public meeting should how be held to discuss the question of the larger memorial. It is hardly likely that any. meeting of the kind can come at once to a satisfactory decision in such an important matter, but we would suggest that the meeting should appoint a committee of business men and representatives of the professions to draw up a report and make recommendations, to be submitted to a further meeting for adoption. Thero should now be no difficulty in raising the amount required for the soldiers' club.
