RACING AND TROTTING NOTES. (Br "Lookek-ON.") • Though a grass track waa available at Biccarton yesterday, it was not in favour with the trainers, practically all tho work being douo on tho plough, which was in good order. R. Emerson was out early, and treated two of his team to a turn in tho jumping ring. Don Francisco seemed keen to renew his acquaintance with obstacles, wlulo Morisca, who is only a novice at tho business, showed great promise. Margerine was given steady pacing twice round, and Larissa was going well after doing five furlongs in lmiu sseo. Gamecock was not fully extended while running seven furlongs in lmin 3:2 sec. Long Rang© did six furlongs in lmin 19 4-sth eec, and Hiss Mimic ran six on tho grass without any effort after time. Judical finished well while sprinting five furlongs in lmin 5 2-sth sec, with a companion. , Adjutant was a little better than Sir Fanciful at tho end of a milo, run in lmin 48 l-sth sec. Hoiro made his re-appearance after a few days' spell, and ran down comfortably from tho half-mile mark. Euripos beat Post Haste over six furlongs in lmin 18 2-sth sec. Fabisco and Tho Sapper ran seven furlongs in lmin 32 3-sth sec. Link Up was much too good for Loch Weir after running five furlongs in lmin 4sec, while Jeannot just boat Tyne over six furlongs in lmin 19 l-sth sec. Algidus, Primum, and Starland finished together after a smart sprint over three furlongs, with Starland going beet over the last hundred yards. Bondage and Pinkie ran half a mile in 52sec, but Bondage could have done better. King of the Valley, Sea Blue, Polygon, and Vascular were in that order at the end of a good three furlong sprint. Steep holm bteat Acquittal over half a mile in 53sec. Glendower did a working gallop over a mile, finishing strongly, and beating a companion who assisted over the last halfmile. Tremena and Kilrush were given steady pacing, and Fiery Cross was not worked being in physic. ' P. McGrath has taken Kimbolton in hand. He looks in robust health. Charley, looking as round as a barrel, has rejoined F. D. Jones's team, after a good spell. Acceptances- for the Takapuna Jockey Club's Summer ■ Meeting close to-day. It. Morris will have the mount on Ladogeur in the big race at Wellington to-day, and will also ride Hyttus, Fulica, and Crenidee in their respective engagements. B. Morris will ride Kobleman in tho Cup, and C. Emerson, who has now recovered from the effects of a poisoned foot, will ride Kiluioon, Sun Dance, and Surveyor. Emerson will also ride Kocsian in tho Telegraph Handioap, while J. Olsen will pilot Michaela in the same event. It is more than likely that Mr tW. R. Kemball will visit Australia in the near future, with a team of horses, provided that boat accommodation can bo secured shortly after the Wellington 'Moating. Hymestra, Nanna, Snub, Rebuff, Scornful, Gladiul, and Wishful will comprise the team. Gladful erustainod some injuries while racing at Auckland, but has made a good recovery, and is quite "all right again.
More than ordinary interest will bo manifested in the Wellington facing. Club's Summer Meeting, which commences at Trenthum to-day. Although the field that will contest the Wellington Cup is not eo strong numerically as in 6ome former years, the all-round quality of the contestants is higher and there is the material for a very fine race. For somo time past the Biccartontrained Punka has been the popular selection, and as she will be ridden by the crack lightweight B. S. Bagby, she will carry a lot of money on the totalisator. Mascot, after her brilliant performances in Auckland, will also be well supported, and, as she is coupled with another sterling performer in. Menelaus, the chances of the race going to Messrs Biddiford are good. Client, Nobleman, Bed Bibbon, Kilmoon, Heathercote, and Bose Pink have each been giving their connexions satisfaction, and altogether the race bears a very open appearance. The big sprint event of the day, the Telegraph Handicap, contains the names of acme very fine sprinters, and Hymestra, Michaela, CrcßßUs, and Silver Link can all be depended upon to rattle over six furlongs at a merry pace. The Wellington Stakes should provide a great contest between the best of the season's two-year-olds in Surveyor, Crenidos, Warplane, Ermine, Affectation, and Macduff, while amongst the three-year-olds still engaged are Glounnng, Afterglow, Kipling, Torfrida, and Melee. All the other events on the programme contain the material for excellent racing, and a successful Meet, ing should bo the result. Tho annual meeting of tho Foxton Bacing Club will be held to-day. Amongst those engaged in tho Foxton Cup, of one mile and a quarter, are such useful horses as Sweet Corn, All Over, Hydras, and Henry Clay, and in consequence a good deal of interest is being taken in tho event. This race is run over a mile and a quarter. The principal sprint event is the Anniversary Handicap, of 250 eovs, six furlongs. » (Br "Searchlight. "3 Acceptances for the opening day_ of tho Forbury Park Trotting Club's Summer Meeting close to-day at 5 p.m. Tho Forbury Park Trotting Club has decided to return to owners all nomination ! : feoe in connexion with its Spring Meeting, which was set down for November 30th, and postponed, on account of the influenza | epidemic. The Meeting will now take place ■ on March 21th. ! A large number of horses were exercised at | • Addington yesterday, but beyond half to 1 three-quarter work, nothing of importance took place. Amongst the trainers that worked their teams were T. G. • Fox, A. Brown, ii. Berry, T. H. Clarkson, C. James, A. Cox, F. H. Gray, F. Holmes, W. Smith, B. •Bennetts, and B. J. Munro. Tnc two Xciv Zealand Trotting Siakes can-*' didatcs, Peter Jackson and Dunstable, were I given a serviceable work-out over a couplo I <-i rcu fts at Addington yesterday. Peter Jackson gave the better display. Ho had
all the outside running, and trotted solidly. Dunstable showed more speed than his companion, but repeatedly loft liia feet when under pressure. Harold Junr. was scratched for the Dunedin C.up immediately tho handicaps up- . peared. The Auckland owner-trainer, A. Brown, will be represented m tho race by Shanghai. Mr A Dickson baa been appointed judge at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's Eaater Meeting. Tit Bits and Gold Queen left for tho North by tho ferry boat yesterday. The former will race at Wellington, and then, along • with Gold Queen, at Marlborough and kelson L next month. ; Monday's "Grey River Argus" says:—Mr i H. E. Luttrell, architect for the Greymoutli Trotting Club, arrived from Christchurch by tho express on Saturday evening. Mr Lut--1 trell is to meet the committee of the Grey- ■ mouth Trotting Club, and will submit all 1 plans and prices for tho improvement of • things generally on Victoria Park. Tho ■ Trotting Club arc to bo congratulated on their go-ahead policy, for it is evident that i tho public who patronise their meetings must bo catered for in a more up-to-date manner. Tho arrangements at present are > too cramped, and would, never meet the needs of tho growing crowd that are favourable towards the light harness sport, -which [ has como to Gtay. ' DAYS OP RACING, CABINET AGREES TO FULL RESTORATION. Last night Sir George. Clifford, president of tho New Zealand Racing Conference, received tho following telegram from the Hon. G. W. Russell, Minister of Internal Affairs:— "I hav© pleasure in informing you that Cabinet has agreed that racing shall bo restored to its full strength as trom February Ist. You may therefore inform interested clubs that their programmes can be at one© prepared." STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER. NO GUARANTEE OF INCREASED RAILWAY FACILITIES. \ (PRESS association telegram.) WELLINGTON, January 21. The Minister of Internal Affairs telegraphed to Sir George Clifford (president of the New Zealand Racing Conference) and to Mr J. Rowe (president of the N«w Zealand Trotting Conference) that Cabinet had decided that from and after February Ist racing might be resumed on the pre-war scale throughout the Dominion. Tho Government had decided that tho war being over and racing having been, resumed ill Great Britain, thero was no need for the continuance of the reduction of one-third imposed during l war time. _ ' In making this , intimation, the Minister informed the gentlemen named that tho j Government could give no guarantee that • race trains would he provided on a pre-war : scale, the reason being' that tho railways were etill short staffed and that there was lack of coal.
