♦ r— , RKSOARTON. A meeting of the Kiccarton Borough Ccrancil was hold last evening. Present—The Mayor (Mr J. Brown) and On* A» D. Ford, J. Munnings, F. George, A. E. Steer®, T. J • Stokos, H. Gudsell, and H. Wise. A circular letter waß received from the Hastings Borough Council recommending that tho Government should be urged to strengthen the financial position of tho Public Health Department., so that it could at all times be prepared to successfully combat any disease that might enter tho country. It was decided to endorse tho letter. A rosotytion from the Napier Borough Council, suggesting that the Government be requested to set up a Royal Commission to onquireinto tho manner in which the recent epidemic was dealt with in the various public hospitals was endorsed. ■ . The secretary of the Canterbury Progress League wrote stating that a clause had now been inserted in the Reserves and Other Lands Disposal nnd Public Bodies Empowering Act, 1918. giving to local authorities power to contribute to the Leagues funds without 'encroaching upon unauthorised «x----penditure. Tho letter was received. The reports of the various committees, detailing work done in the district since the last meeting of the Council, were adopted. A report as .to the work of the Council's water-cart was received from the foreman, and tho town olerk, and was referred to the Works Committee. Cr. Ford drew attention to the fact that about November 16th last, ho and one of the Publio Health Department's inspectors went round tho borough inspecting the various houses." McDowell wrote requesting the formaI tion of a v footpath in Colenso street. —Referi red to the Works Committee. ' The Finance Committee reported as follows :—A recording meter has been installed, ! showing the variations in' the loading over tho I twenty-four hours. Repairs have been carried out at the pumping station, and the olebtric 'plant is now in thorough working ' order again.—The report was adopted. 1 It was decided to grant the Sumner LifeSaving and Surf Bathing Club the sum of £10. It was agreed to make a rebate of £6 to the lessee of the Town Hall, owing to the hall ! being closed during the influensa epidemic, j The borough engineer, was instructed to reI port upon the question of connecting 'the ! Island well with the reservoir. ' i Consent was given to a private right-of-way i on Mount Pleasant. | Mr J. W. Spenoo forwarded his resignai tion as borough engineer, to having ibeen appointed to a similar position to the Stratford County Council. The resignation was received with regret. .* It was decided that Wednesday be the i statutory half-holiday. A deputation, consisting of Mr H. 7. Marriner, waited on the Council on behalf of the I I Navy League, and urged the necessity of contributing towards .the fund for the widows and children of men who lost their lives in ; the naval warfare. ! The Council decided to hold the question over. until next meeting, and In the mean-. ! time to have enquiries made as to the Council's legal position in connexion with suoh j grants.
