The showery weather experienced iu Gisborne during tho holidays accounted for more than one mishap to motorists on back country roads. One serious accident occurred on the Wharerata road, where a car, negotiating a "creasy" bend, skidded oS the road and through the fence, rolling over and oV er a distance of about loOft. There was only one occupant of the car, and he fortunatelv succeeded in jumping out a s it went through the fence but he rolled a considerable distance down the hill after the car. The falling vehicle broke through thescrub a nd was brought to a standstill by the obstruction \ further somersault and it would have fallen over a cliff below. The car, which was considerably knocked about, was subsequently recovered with tho aid of block and tackle, and despite its rout/h usage the engine continued m runnin<* order, and was utilised to recover the machine from its very awkward predicament.
