The Frcnch ship Duquesne. which t.'Ought a largo general cargo to Lyttelton from San Francisco,- . will probably leavo this port on. Thursday or Friday next for Australia. Messrs Miller Bros.' steamer Manaroa, left Dunedin otP Friday, laden with general cargo for Wellington, and after discharge at that port will procced to Auckland. On her return from the North the Manaroa will remain at Port Chalmers to take on board' Messrs Miller Bros.' salvaging party for the West Coast. She will leave Port about the middle of February, and proceed to the spot where the Union. Steam Ship Company's steamer Waikaro was wrecked. The party will only salvage the gear of the sunken vessel, as it is considered impracticable to raise the vessel. As the Manaroa has been fitted with saloon accommodation, she will take on board a tourist party, for whoso' convenience a motor launch is being carried to convey (><» '""nats jwind the Sounds while tin* salvaging operations are in progress. The collier Kokiri is expected to load coal at the West Coast this week for discharge at Port Chalmers. The Calm was expected at Dunedin on Saturday from Bluff. From Dunedin slie proceeds to Timaru, Lyttelton. Wellington, and Wanganui. The coastal steamer Kotare is to leave Dunedin to-day, bound for Timaru and Lyttelton. The vessel will load merchandise here for Dunedin and Invercargill. The auxiliary scow Houto arrived in port on Saturday morning to load produce for Onehunpa and Dargaville. She leaves for the North this evening. The Wootton will probably come off the slip at Wellington to-clay. and may load tomorrow for Wellington, for which port she is expected to sail to-morrow evening. Mr J. W. Crotty has joined the Putiki as second officer in place of Mr P. Treleaven. Mr E. J. Pirie has signed on the Kauri as engineer. A war-time production, the C. and D. liner Port Denison, will probably be loading in New Zealand in April for England. She was built as recently r.s May last by Workman, Clark, and Co., Belfast, and is a steel twin-screw steamer of 10,884 tons gross. Her dimensions are: Lensrth 4Soft 4in, breadth 60ft 3in, and deptli 32ft Sin. She is fit-ted with the latest engineering and "navigatig appliances. I Captain J. Boilons, of the Government | steamer Hinemoa, has t>ow recovered suffiI cientlv from his recent illness to be able to get about asain. He expects 6'nortly to take charge of his old ste-amer. It was announced some weeks ago that the new American wooden steamer Georsjina Rolph had been fixed to load at San Frajjnsco for Wellington, but advice has now j be»n received by the Union Company that the steamer will not -visit New Zealand. The Georgir.a Rolph sailed from San Francisco on January Sth with a full cnr?o for Sydney. The liner Ulimaroa left Wellington at 6.25* a.m. on Saturday for London, via Suez. Captain Wylie is in charge. The Moeraki, which is due at Wellington to-day irom Sydney direct, is bringing HO saloon and 63 steerage passengers. She will sail on the return trip at 5 p.m. on Thursday n?xt. _ Considerable interest was 6hown in Wellington shipping circles on Saturday afternoon in the arrival of the fine new American wooden steamer, Annette Rolph. The Annette RoJph comes from San Francisco, by way of Auckland, at which port she cal!£d owing to a shortage of ccal and water. She has a. somewhat interesting, but brief, history, and enjoy* the rather unique reputation of having been built ia tho short period
of 2S dnys. The Annette Rolph is one of threo vcseeio completed almost simultaneously, the others being the Gcorcjna Roiph, «t present hound from Sail trincisco to Sydnev. siirl the Joan of Arc. Sho 13 the first American-built v.ooden steamer to visit these waters, and is most elaborately fitted, especially the captain's s;nd officers' quarters. The crew sleep in a fine roomy cabjn, containing about twelve bunks, which are all painted white. The cabin, 100, is exceptionally well ventilated. The Annette Rolph has on bonrd 3000 tons of car*»o, 813 tone of which will be transhipped to Auckland. Tho slMnier Inga. arrived off the Wangauui bar on Wednesday afternoon from Sydney, after a trip occupying seven days, crossed the bar at P. 30 thai evening, and beinsr a "clean ship" moored «t tbe Castlecliff ivliarf. Ciptaiu Bull reports that he had .an exceptionally calm passage across—one of the most favourable he had experienced. ' The steamer brought a cargo of coal for the Wanganui gasv.orks, and a deck oirgo of hardwood for the Harbour Board. In his report for the year, Captain Collins, harbourmaster .qt'Xelaon, eta.ted that 1206 steamers, 127 sailing vessels, and one oceangoing seamer visited Nelson, tbe total register tonnage being 201,017, as against 284,269 for 1917.
