The extent to which drunkenness has decreased in Great Britain during tho period of the war is shown by returns just issued of the number of convictions for the offence recorded in England and "Wales for the years 1916 and 1917, as compared with those for 1914, tho year in which the war broke out. \ The figures are:*— /Convictions: 1914, 183,828; 1916, 84,191; 1917, 46,410.
