». — I J EAUL COWLEY. (By Cable.—Pros* Association.—Copyright.) (Australian and N. 4. Cable Association.) (Received January 18th., 1.45 p.m.) LONDON, January 15* The death is announced of EarCowley. The*' late Earl Cowley was born in 1866, and served with the Imperial Yeomanry in the South African War. He was thrice married', his first and second wives divorcing liim. JIB W. B. BTILLER. A well-known figure in banking circles in the Dominibn, in the person oi Mr William Boyce Builer, passed awaj at his late residence, Mac Murray road, Remuera, Auckland, last week. The late Mr Builer was a son of the late Rev. James Builer, Methodist minister. He waj born in the Kaipara district on May 23rd, 1847, and was sducated at Wesley College, Auckland; l'oomath's Grammar School, Wellington, and Christ's College, Christchurch. After spending 4J years in mercantile offices, he entered the service of the Bank of New Zealand, and in 1874 was appointed, accountant to the Timaru branch of the bank. In 1879, he was transferred to Dunedin in/the same capacity, and a year later was* appointed manager of the New Plymouth branch. After five years in Taranaki, he was again removed to Ounedin, this time as manager, and in 1892 he was appointed senior assistant inspector of the bank. He succeeded the late Mr T. L. Murray as Auckland manager, a position he held antil he retired some years .ago. A highly respected resident of Auck- . land city, Mr Edward Brooke-Smith, , died at his residence, "Woodstock,' , Parnell, on Thursday. Deceased was in , his eighty-first year. Born in Birming- ' liam, he later went to Port Elizabeth, ! Cape .Colony, where he engaged in business, and also took a prominent part in public affairs during a residence of twenty-teevm years. 4n 1886, Mr Brooke-Smith came to New Zealand, and was the first to take up. special claims on the beaches at the West Coast of the South Island to dredge for gold. Afterwards Mr Brooke-Smith was a grain merchant at Oamaru, and in 189 Vhe toured the United. States, Canada, Great Britain, and the Continent with patent businesses. In 1898, Mr Brooke-Smith went to Auckland, and had resided there ever since. He was the founder of the Auckland Kindergarten Association, and only relinquished the hon. secretaryship last December. He was also secretary to thp Trust Board of the Orphans' Home. At the time of death' Mr Brooke-Smith was a vestryman of St. Mary's Cathedral, Parnell, also manager for Hughes Patent Agency. He is survived by a widow and grown-up family. -
