4 TROUBLESOME NATIVES,

Mr Poynton has announced that in October, 1916, -the conduct of the tribe at' Malekula was ko threatening that ' the 'Una took a contingent of native •police from Itabaul, 'joined the French ship- Kersaint, and -landed contingents of sailors arid police. Heavy bush fighting was encountered. The Una had only,, one- casualty, but the native Eolice- lost more than half their num. er * Again last September the survey shin Fantome landed an expedition at Malua Bay and mounted two Maxims on a cliff behind which hostile natives were in force. After half an hour's fighting the sailors occupied the ridge from which the main resistance had come. There were no casualties among the landing party. i i !
