STRICKEN TROOPSHIP
« OUTBREAK OF INFLUENZA
Tho soldiers who left Now Zealand as tho mounted draft of the 41st Reinforcement have had an unenviable experience, as is disclosed by a letter received in Wanganui on Thursday. Tho draft of 500 men left "Wellington by tho Moeraki for Sydney, where they wero shippod on board a transport with 1000 Australian Light Horse. At a South African port tho triinsport was recalled.
"Wo arrived at Port Adelaide on Saturday from Albany," tlio writer states. "We were not allowed to land at Albnrfy, and the lumpers refused to coal the ship without heavy sureties. About ton cases of influenza were put off at Albany, and wo left over 500 men at Fremantie. We woro at Fremantle for eight days, lying about three miles out. Up to tlio time we left, there were 25 deaths. It was a sad sight to see the worst coses being put over the eido into small tug-boats, as the scft was choppy, and they were drenched before reaching the quarantine station. At present (time of writing) 400 men are in quarantine on Torrens Island, off Port Adelaide."
