MILITARY DEFAULTERS.
MEN STILL "WANTED.'
Ourinw the two months that have elapsed since the signing of. the aln *'®" tice several additional militniy defaulters have been arrested and put on trial. Some' have been sentenced to terms of imprisonment that, will carry tlieni well beyond the signing of tue peace treaty. . Even after allowance has been made for errors and for men who are outside New Zealand, it appears that there are some hundreds of defaulters stnl 10 be brought to book (say» the minion"). Four months ago the records showed 1283 defaulters tor whom warrants were in the hands ot. "J® and whom the police have failed to find. Some i>t xhese rner. are living under snmed names. .Sopie of them are evadiDc arrest by keeping on the move from place to place, and a few are supposed still to be hiding in the bush away from the settlements. The signing of the peace treaty and the publication of thu defaulters list will not affect the liability of the defaulters for whom warrants have been issued. One or two men have assumed that they could now return to their ordinary liaunts in safety but they have been disillusioned. 'Ihcse delaultcrs arc ''wanted," and there is nothing in the present law to secure them an amdicity at aDy time in the f-Jtujc.
