LYTTELTON NEWS

MAGISTRATE'S COURT. Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., presided at the Lyttelton Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, when Elius T. Eric keen (Mr Hoban), master mariner, was charged with paying for intoxicating liquor on licensed premises, i to wit, the Empire Hotel, Lyttelton, for _ consumption by. Gertrude Thomas and Nell Dodds, contrary to tho antishouting regulations. Mr Hoban stated that defendant admitted the breach, but pleaded in extenuation that he was an American, and iwas ignorant of the war regulations concerning "shouting." Ho regretted having broken the laws of thie country. The Magistrate remarked that, under the circumstances, the case was not one which called for a heavy penalty. A fine of £1 and costs was imposed. Nora Daley (Mr Hcban), a barmaid employed at tho Empire Hotel, Lyttelton, iTSa charged with receiving payment for intoxicating liquor, contrary to the anti-shouting regulations. Mr Hoban said the defendant was under the impression that the en.tiehonting law© were operative during the currency of. tho war only, and were therefore no longer in foros. The girl had lost her position, mid counsel asked for a light penalty. Defendant was fined £5 and costs, and suspended from following her occupation for one month. THE pictures: A fine Paramount war film, "The Spirit of 17," starring Jack Pickford, was screened at the Harbour Light Picture Theatre last evening. During tho screening of this picture, Mr T. C. Hatton sang "The Boys of the Old Brigade." To-night tho same programme will be presented. The leading attraction to-morrow, will be an excellent World drama, "Sally in Our Allev," the leading roles being played by Muriel Ostriche and Qarlylo Blackwell. A continuation, "Tho Ncglected Wife" (serial) will also be shown.
