The scarcity of matches _in England is illustrated by this story in tho "Pall Mall Gazette," under the heading, "A Minor Profiteer" "A friend tells me that a few mornings, ago at a London railway station he witnessed the refilling of an automatic machine with boxes of matches. As soon as the official who filled it had -departed a railway porter, with an. apparently inexhaustible supply of pennies, set to work and extracted •very box.
