COUNTY COUNCILS.

WAIREWA

At tha last meeting of tho Wairewa County Council there were present-Messrs: J. v. Chapman (chairman), J. *-„ B " cha ', F. Parkinson, T. Feather, J. 0. t,oop, and G. Barclay. An apology for absence was received from Kr M. Cooney. „ Mr H. Chapman interviewed the Council relative lo the securing -of a do^ r district. The clerk was instructed to write to tho Department of Internal Affairs to ascertain if tlio Council had authority to build a residence for a doctor, and to procure all available information from the Department. Mr T. Quealy interviewed tho Council regarding the electrical reticulation of the county. He read a report explaining the present position, and advised the Council to lost no time in pushing on with arrangements. Mr Quealy also read correspondence from Mr Templin. After some discussion it was decided, to arrange a combined conference for January 25th at Duvauchelle. The chair-, man .thanked Mr Quealy for the good work It was proposed by Mr Coop, seconded by Mr Parkinson, and carried: 'That the necessary steps be taken towards the raising of a loan in the Wairewa County of £10,000 for the carrying on of electrical work m the county, and that a poll of ratepayers be also taken at the first opportunity.' Mr L. Joblin tendered for the position of dog registrar on the same terms as last year. The tender was accepted. Tho District Health Officer wrote regarding the free supply of petrol to motor-cars engaged in the influenza epidemic. The clerk was instructed to procure the required ini formation. . , The Royal Horticultural Society made an appeal for its war fund. The application was deferred until after the decision of the Peace Conference as to, indemnities, etc._ The Banks Peninsula Rabbit Board intimated that the Board could not allow its inspector to act as motor inspector for the Council. The clerk was instructed to reply that tho Council did not consider it its duty to dismiss tlie inspector, it being the opinion of the Council that the Board should deal with the matter itself. The North Canterbury Hospital and Chantable Aid Board wrote asking the Council to convey tho Board's thanks to all porkers in the recent influenza epidemic. The chairman stated that the matter had been attended

Springs County Council wrote regard-, inc Miller's bridge. It was resolved to . try and arrange for a deputation from each county to meet at the bridge m company with Messrs Quealy and Mncarlney, and also a representative of tho Drainage Board. Messrs Parkinson, Coop, and Cooney were appointed a deputation from the countyThe Hastings Borough Council submitted a resolution in connexion with the Health Department. It was decided to endorse the Tho Napier Borough Council submitted a resolution as to the establishment'of a 1 Royal Commission to enquire into tho recent, influenza epidemic. It was resolved to endorse the resolution. . ' Motions of condolence wero passed with the relative of tho late Mr Geo. Rutherford and Mrs H. D. Buchanan. It was decidod to add 3. ten per cent, penalty to all rates unpaid after March 15th. The clerk waa instructed to interview Mr Giddens regarding his present indisposition. A report on the recent epidemic showed that the cost of the measure®- taken by the Council was approximately £152, which was equal to £1 for each case treated by-the nurses, engaged by tlie Council. Tho clerk was instructed to notify Messrs Crump and Stanbury Bros, to clean certain drew attention to a dangerous spot on the Long Bay road, and on the motion of Mr Coop, seconded by Mr Barclay, matter was left in Mr Feather's hands. The clerk was instructed to write to tho Forestry Department with a view tj obtainin" a list of tho best forest trees suitable for irro'vin" 011 the Peninsula, and to ascertain if the "Government supplied eame, and if so at what figure. At the annual meeting Mr Chapman was re-e'ected chairman. Thursday was agreed upon as the statutory half-holiday.
