PICTON HARBOUR.
SUGGESTED SUBMARINE BASE. (PHES3 ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) "WELLINGTON, January 15. "While ho was at Picton the Hon. T. M. "Wilford, Minister of Marine, had a conference with the local authorities on the question of using the Picton harbour and the Sounds as a submarine base for New Zealand. Admiral Halsey's approval was quoted as sufficient warrant for the idea. The Minister said he had advocated the claims of the harbour both in and out of Parliament. In conjunction with a deputation, he visited Waikawa Valley, a few minutes' ride away, and said it appeared to be well adapted for an aviation and hydroplane station. He suggested that a plan be prepared and a copy sent to all Ministers.
