COUNTY COUNCILS.
AMURI. At the last meeting of the Arnwi County Council, there were prosent:—Messrs M. Bethell (chairman), H. T. Beaven, H. E. Davison, and G. O. Rutherford. Three months' leave of absence was granted to Cr. G. Fulton, owing to ill-health. _ Two applications were received for the of cutting cocksfoot in the Lyndon Hiding. It was decided to accept Mr J, Mills's offer. Mr J. Lunn made an offer fo_r_ cutting cocksfoot on tho Hanmer roads, which was accepted. The Minister of Internal Affairs stated that the Government had decided that local bodies should make their own arrangements regarding peace celebrations. .Mr It. Furze asked permission to lay a pipo across the Balmoral road, which was granted. F. Chapman applied for a rise in wages owing to the high cost of chaff, etc. It was decided to gTant an increase of Is 3d per day. Mr -J. Mills applied for permission to tako his engine and a load of wool through the county. It was decided to grant him a license. Mr J. H. Davison waited upon the Connoil and asked that tho culvert and cutting on Lowry Peaks road be put in hand. The overseer waa directed to supply specifications for the culvert. The chairman, Waiau School Committee, pointed out the danger from motor cars driving too quickly by the school, and asksd that notices be erected. It was decided to grant the Tequest, and the clerk was directed to ascertain where sign-posts are required in the oounty, and to approach the Automobile Association for assistance. The clerk of the Ashley County .Council asked that a delegate bs appointed for a conference on kea suppression. It was decided to appoint Cr. G. 0. Rutherford. The Minister of Agriculture stated that the matter of increasing the subsidy for the destruction of keas wae under consideration. A petition waa received from ratepayers and householders of Hanmer Springs, asking the Council's aid in approaching the Gov- ' ernment to allow them to use the electrio current for lighting their premises. It was decided to support the petition. .it. The overseer was directed to estimate the cost of widening the Pahau bridge. It was decided to call tenders for metalling portions of Mt. Palm and Hawkswood Letters from the Hospital Board and others dealing with tho proposed hospital, were deferred till next meeting. It was decided to appoint Wednesday as the statutory half-holiday. HEATHOOTE. The Hcathcote Cornnty Council met last evening. Present —Messrs G. K. Burton (acting-chairman), A. H. Adams, G. M. Hall, and W. "W. Scara. In reply to Mr Abel's request for a lamp at Garland's quarries, it waa resolved that the Council could not accede to the requeat, but it was decided that the road ahould be repaired. A deputation from the Hillsborough Carters League waited upon the Council and urged a reduction in the wheel tax, and that the money eo received be spent "upon Opawa road. After . considerable discußeion the Council postponed further consideration of the matter till the next meeting.
