The Berlin correspondent of the "Tidende," describing the fighting which resulted in a Government victory, states that Heir Ebcrt's troops on Wednesday beat off the Spartacus at,tack on the Foreign Office. The buttle raged till midnight in south-western and central Berlin. Government tioops, assisted by airplanes, bombed one railway station. <>5 people being killed. Subsequently thoy attacked the Lehrter Station, where Spartacus troops fired oil ivn incoming train. The Government's situation is improving hourly. The Civic Council has appealed to citizens to join the. Republican Guard. The Spartacus Group, after seizing tho waterworks at Berlin, attempted to capture tho cattle market. The President of tho Republic addressed the demonstrators, blaming the Government's weakness for the present chaos. Fresh Spartacus disturbances have occurred at Dresden, Essen, and Munich. A crowd entered the Cathedral at Munich and destroyed valuable articles. Many women wero injured. The Independent Socialists in Berlin now regret that they left tho Government, and aro seeking to return as mediators between tho Government and the Spartacus Group. The Government, however, refuse mediation " until t tho Spartacus supporters have been evicted from the newspaper offices and 'other public buildings. Government troops, shooting into tho "Freilieit" newspaper office in Berlin, caused a fire. The building was gutted. It is reported that von Eichorn has fled from Berlin. Marshal von Hindenburg has returned to Cassel. It is roported that the Government rejected his offer to conduct military operations against the Spartacus Group. SAILORS DESERT EXTREMISTS. AMSTERDAM, January 11. The elections for the National Assembly of the Republic of Baden resulted in the complete rout of the extremists. Forty-one Centre nominees were elected. 35 Socialists, 24 Democrats, and seven Nationalists. The banks opened in Berlin for a few hours to-day. The streets aro now generally empty, the inquisitive crowds which thronged them earlier in the week remaining indoors. The' sailors have left the Spartacus Group and surrendered their leader, Doorenbach, to the Government. "NONSENSICAL AND UNTRUE." LONDON, January 10. A German Government wireless message states that M. Radek, the Russian Bolshevist, is urging the Spartacus Group to hold on until Russian troops arrive, as the Soldiers' Council of tne 10th Army will let the Russians through. This, states the mossage, is nonsensical and untrue. No Soldiers' Council will tolerate the intervention of Russian troops in our revolutionary fight. THE GENERAL ELECTION. BERNE, January 10. The German Majority Socialists are conducting a vigorous campaign for the elections for the Constituent Assembly on January 19th. There will be a sories of colossal demonstrations in every constituency on the eve of the poll. In some constituencies the Independent Socialists are repudiating the extremist leaders, and joining forces with the Majority Party, whose cry everywhere is: "No Bolshevism!" Tney hope to have a cloar majority over all other parties. The Catholic Centre Party is the only non-Socialist party with .any prospect of securing large support. NO INTERVENTION. WASHINGTON, January 10. According to a high official, the United States will not send troops to Berlin to quell the riots. IS LIEBKNECHT DEAD? (Renter's Telegram* J (Received January 14th, 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, January 11. The Berlin correspondent of the "Evening News" reports that Dr. Liebknecht was killed in street fighting.
