'J'iio gi.ue of the footlights, however, proved 'too great an attraction lor him, and early in 1&62 he made ins debut as an actor. Later in the same yoar he journeyed to America, and volunteered in the Civil 'War, and became brigade surgeon in tho Federal Army, resigning in lcii-l to appear on the stage of Auierica with John Wilkos Looth, mother of Edwin Booth, the assassin of President Lincoln. Ho shortly afterwards returned to his native country, and played in his adaptation of E. ii. Hanilcy's novel, "Lady Lee's Widowhood." Ho reappeared in London in li&O, and scoiej a great success in Sir F. C. Burnand's burlesque of "Black-Eyed Susan." His triumph in this piece brought him to the St. James's Theatre, where lie playod with Henry Irving and Ellen Terry. In 1876 he took control of the Criterion Theatre, where he produced a long succession of plays, in which ho took the leading part, and he became famous for his acting in tho name part of "David Garrick." In 1899 ho opened his new theatre, which he called Wyndliam's, and in 1902 he was knighted. In 1835 and onwards, his leading lady was Miss Mary Moore (Mrs Aibury), who became his partner in the proprietorship of the Criterion and Wyndham's theatres and of tho New Theatre, which was opened in 1903. The delightful acting of these two artists in a number of comedies made their association something memorable in theatrical annals. In 1916, Sir Charles Wyndham, a few months after tho death of his first wife, married Miss Moore.
