.In the Victorian Legislative Assembly last week (states the Melbourne "Argus") Mr Farthing directed the attentiqn of the Treasurer (Mr McPherson) to the present commercial value of Australian gold. In the Far East, he said, an Australian sovereign •had to-day a commercial value of 2Ss to 30s. The Government of the United States had been wiser than had those responsible in Australia, and had raised the value of silver. The result was that in Eastern countries silver values had increased something like 12J per cent. ll' the gold industry of Victoria could receive an addr«'j 121 per cent, to its receipts it would mean all the difference between the loss some mines were sustaining and the profit they wished to make.
