In the "Cargen" visitors' bookwpl be found the names of innumerable persons who have at one-'time or another made this hotel their temporary home, and who have come from all "parts of _tne world. Amongst the patrons of "Cargen" have been, or are, such notabilities, as Lord Glasgow, Major ~Sir Robert Walker, Bt., Sir Douglas Mawson, Sir Robert Best, Sir Wm. Smith, Sir Wm. Hall-Jones, the Hon. W: A. Holman, and many others equally well ktiown. • "•Cargen" occupies, an ideal position, which, although so qyiet and secluded, is yet' within four minutes' walk of Auckland railway station, the boats,-the theatfes, and the business heart of the city. . Eight storeys-in-height, the immense, size of the building recalls memories of tlie American hotels, with which in point of convenience and luxury "Cargen" will fully compare. The Dining-room is of noble proportions, and it'may truly be said that there .are few such apartments, in the Southern Hemisphere. This great room (100 ft in length)', with its colour scheme of . white- and gold, its hand-painted decorations, its snowy table linen, glass and glittering plate, presents an indescribably bright anci inviting appearance. and the fact that almost orio entire side of tho room is glazed, permitting a beautiful view of the harbour < ensures a splendid light, and adds not a little to the general effect. An orches-: tra contributes to the pleasure of the guests whilst dinner is in progress. The ballroom is another noteworthy' feature of "Cargen," and mention b.e-made of the promenade roof of the house (reached by elevator). This splendid hotel is fireproof and lit throughout by : elcfctricity. Exquisite, taste has been displayed in the furnishing, and the keynote of tho place is, contort, combined with elegance and refinement. Considering the advantages* "Cnrgen" offers to' its patrons,, tho tariff must be considered moderate. • There are' available a number ofsuites of rooms, each containing its own? private bathroom, etc. There is not' such another hotel in Australasia.
