EDUCATION OF SOLDIERS
ARRANGEMENTS IN CANTER- ' BURY. Regarding the arrangements being made for tho education of returned soldiers in Canterbury, Mr W. H. Montgomery, Ofticer-in-charge of Educational ana Vocational Training for Returned Soldiers, is at present on an official visit to Canterbury. Mr Montgomery states that at tho Christchurcii Hospital, Mrs Templer, who has been doing valuable voluntary wui'k among tho soldiers for many months, has been officially appointed occupational work instructress. She will commence her duties in February. The erection at the Christctfurch Hospital of.the plant necessary to splintmaking work has been now almost completed, and it is hoped to make a start with some macbinca next Monday. Later, lectures on University subjects will also be given at tho Hospital, but arrangements in that direction are hindered by the collegiate vacation. Mr Montgomery has, however, had an encouraging ietier from Professor Hight, who feels sure that the local professorial board will do all in its power to holp to further the Government's schema , , At Hanmer, Miss Webster, the travelling Government instructress, is at present giving instrucion in leather work to Mr Groenhill, who is already carpentry and hasket-work instructor at that hospital. Arrangements are being made for book-keeping and accountancy classes, and Mr Montgomery is ready to submit to the Minister recommendations regarding the appointment of an instructional •, officer tor those branches. The provision of further classes at Hanmer depends largely upon accommodation. If Mr Montgomery can secure a building which ho has'in view, he hopes to to oomrcenco bootmaking classes. An instructor in that line •has already been secured for Auckland. The system ot University lectures, too, will extend to Hanmer. * where agricultural subjects will be specialised in- Practical instruction in agriculture will given them. Yesterday Mr Motugomerv inspected a property (adjoini „ tlio Hospital) which it is proposed that the Government should acquire for instructional purposes. . . , , Throughout the Dominion, hearty co-operation in the educational B chem is being shown by the Red Cross organisation. which, in all cases, is providing not oiiU- the buildings, but also the equipment necessary.
