SHOP HOURS.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THI PBESS." .. Sir, —With reference to the above.subject, I -wish to endorse the remarks made by your correspondent H. H. Mathias. Speaking from experience, I consider the hours as at present are quite unnecessary. All shopping could very well bo dono by 5 p.m. without causing any very great inconvenience to the shopkeepers or public. Thp drapery firms in particular could very ttell close their premises at 5 j>.ni., as this line of business is totally different from a business dealing in perishable articles. Referring to the late Friday night, when employees are kept till 9 p.m., can anyone say that these hours are necessary, especially during the winter months? Not only do the assistants in the various departments have to -work such hours, but ali-o the clerical staff, which means for them ten hours of tedious work in close confinement. Trusting the hours of shops will eventually bo altered to allow the employees a little more freedom, yours, etc., WELL-WISHER. January Bth.
