RACING AND TROTTING NOTES. (Br "Looker-ON.") Acceptances for the South Canterbury and Wairio Meetings are due to-morrow. The Riccarton-trained horses that raced at tho Southland meetings arrived home on Tuesday evening. Riccarton. stables will not be represented at the Wairio Meeting nert week. Margerine, who was exercised oti tha lead yesterday, appears to havo thrown oS her eoroncs3 behind. R. J. Mason arrived home early in the week, but left hi 3 team at Trentham. At the salo o£ blood stock at Auckland on Friday last a total of £649 was realised for 29 lots sold. Tho highest price was 55 guineas, for a yearling filly by Marble Arch— Gweniad. A yearling colt by Lucnllua— Merry Nif brought 52 guineas. Biplane, who won £13,596, and was recently sold at a price stated to bo about 3000 guineas, waa eecurod by Mr G. D. Greenwood a 6 a yearling' for 375 guineaa. Gloaming, who has now scored six wins and a second in seven starts, for a total of £8394 in stakes, was bought for 230 guineas. When Kilrush fell in the Summer Cup at Ellerslie it waa at first thought that his rider, L. Morris, had escaped with a shaking, but' it was afterwards found that he had broken a small bone in one of his arms, and he was unable to again at the meeting. At the Auckland R.C. Summer Meeting there were five iacc« in • which two-year-olds took pait, and in only one, tho Midsummer Handicap on the last day, waa an Auckland youngster in a place, Canowindra' finishing third in that event. While contesting tho Onehunga Steeplechase at Ellerslie on Saturday Haute re broke down badly, and had to bo destroyed. . The old chestnut won the Great Northern Steeplechase as far back as 1912. In addition to Loyal Arch, with whom, he was so successful at Ellerslie, tho Wellington sportsman, Mr H. W. Brown, also purchased the iilly Princess Charming during the courso of the Auckland Meeting. Mr Brown's team is to remain in the North until after the Takapuna Meeting. Whether B. Deeloy took a risk on Gloaming, at the finish of the Great Northern Derby or not was a question : freely discussed after the race at Ellerslie (writes "Whalebone"), and ifom the stand it certainly looked as if he did, the general opinion being that the Auckland horseman got out of it luckily by being fined £10. Discussing the matter with R» J. Mason, the trainer of Gloaming, he the writer that he did not consider Deeley in any way to blame, for the horse had the habit of hanging in, and once he, passed Kilmoon would naturally go into the rails. This, of course, excuses Deeley as far as any question of a wilful cross was concerned, but had the occurrence occurred a little sooner it would probably have cost him tho xacc. Cynic, who ran second to Red Ribbon in the A.R.C. Handicap, was making his fourteenth appearance under silk since he ran second :n the sanio race last year, and in the interval h© has not earned a penny-piece towards his keep, says "Whalebone" in tho Auckland "Star." The imported horse has I developed a bit of a temper, and in' his I raced is inclined to pay a bit more attention to the horses near him than to the work | before him, which naturally does not tend to a good showing. In the raoe in question his rider carried a longer whip -than usual, ono of ihe kind used on trotting horses,. which enabled him to get it round his mount's flanks when be showed a disposition to stop, I and the unusual treatment evidently gave him a bit of a shock, for his performance in running second was the best ho has given for a long time.

An interested spectator of .the proceedings on both days of the recent Southland R.C. Summer' Meeting was a veteran sportsman, Mr Gr. Field, of Alexandra, aged 82 years, who was visiting . Invercargill for the first time. Mr Field was a -well-known owner on the goldfields in davs gone by, and his daughter, Mise Ruby Field, competed successfully in quite-a number of'saddle trotting, races, winning four times on R-üby and other .horsee (writes "Sir Modred" in the "Southland Times"). The horsewoman. of ' the race track of other days, now Mrs McGinnios, and the mother of nine young, New Zealandera, has not vacated th« saddle for good, m only last yeaT she was a winning competitor in the class of lady; ritiera at the Palmeraton SouthA. and P. Show. (By . "Searchlight.") Nominations close to-diy for the Nelson T.C.'s Annual Meeting, and to-morrow for the Marlborough Trotting Club's Annual Meeting. A. Hendricksen is taking a small team to the Nelson and Marlborough Trotting Meetings, which take place next month. The three-year-old pacer Mykot, who finished third in the Great Northern Derby, returned to New Brighton yesterday, and is to be placed on the easy list. Author Dillon has arrived home in good condition after his Auckland campaign, and ie to be given a couplo of weeks' spell. 1 Emperor, winner of the Provincial Handicap at Hokitika on Tuesday, is a four-year-old gelding by Rothschild from Empress Eugenie, and waa brol by the Ashburton studmoster, J. McDonnell, who reoently disposed of Hothschild's son to a patron of R. Allan's stable. By bis success he gave his new owner an early return for his outlay. The Addington trainer C.- James has . received additions to bis stable in the shape of a. two-year-old and a three-year-old by the imported siro Nelson Bingen from Ocean Wave, dam of Murioata. Both have a pleasing way of moving, and ehape well foi novices. A. Fleming is preparing a three-yeat-old trotter by Ualindo from Mary Lincoln for the New Zealand Trotting Stakes. _ The youngster is , half-brother to Willie Lincoln and Pieter Tim merman, and is showing promise. E. Berry is keeping tho four-year-old filly Eilywood up to the collar at Addington, in view of the coming Wellington Meeting. J. Fraser lias returned Merry- Thorpe; to his owner,. In the majority of his races the son of Lord Althorpe has shown plenty of speed, but is not too reliable. Handicaps for the Wellington Trotting Club's Anmia.l Meeting will be declared tomorrow. Citadel, who won . tho Century Handicap at Hokitika ycsteiuay, is owued by Uie local sportsman, Mr M. Kenning ton. It marked tha eon of King Cole's eeoon-i win. during tho holiday meetings. Although there was a good representation of visiting horses at the Auckland Trotting Club's Summer Meeting, Canterbury in particular sending a strong contingent, hoises owned and trained in tuu Auckland province more than held their own against the opposition, securing £1370 of the £6850 given in stakes, while the visitors toon £«48(1.
