AUSTRIA.
♦ RESIGNED TO SACRIFICES. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Reuter'a TelegTams.) BERNE, January 6. Baron Haupf, an Austrian Minister, in an interview said that sentiment in Austria was about evenly divided between desire to join Germany and to remain an independent republic. Possibly there was a slight majority in favour of the latter. Austria was reconciled to extensive territorial sacrifices. Vienna would be a big loser, and probably would never regain its former standing. Baron Haupf thinks that as partial compensation, it should be made the seat of the Tribunal of the League of Nations. FIGHTING AT LEMBERG. (Received January Bth, 7.20 p.m.) COPENHAGEN, January 7. Twenty thousand Ruthenians have surrounded Lemberg. A Polish women's division participating in the defence, has suffered severely. Many women are being captured. The Archbishop of Lemberg states that girl prisoners were tortured outright, the cruelties of the Bolshevists being unparalleled in modern history.
