PERSONAL NOTES. Mrs M. Baxter, of Bishop street-, has received cable advicc that her son, Corporal "NY. J. Baxter, who has been a prisoner of Avar in Germany, has been repatriated, and arrived at Ripon on December 30th. Mr T. Clark. Tinwald. has been advised that his brother. Private Alfred! Clark, who was a prisoner of war, has arrived at Ripon. Mrs J. Hyland, Havelock street, Ashburton, has feceived advice that lior third son, Sergeant Francis Hyland, rlied of wounds whilst a prisoner of war. in Germany. Sergeant Hyland, who was 26 vears of age, left with the 16th Reinforcements. He was twice wounded. PERSONAL ITEMS. —4 Mr D. Robertson, Public Service Commissioner, is visiting the South Islaiid on business connected with tne re-classification of the service. Mr G. G. Hanson, who has been appointed ' senior resident master of the John McGlashan College, Dunedm, is at present headmaster of the Annat school. Dr H. T. J. Thacker, M.P., is at present making a motor tour of the \Vest Coast. He is accompanied by Mrs Thacker, Mr T. B. Pike, and his brother, Mr Chris. B. Thacker. Sir James Allen, Acting-Prime Minister, arrived in Christchurch from Wellington yesterday morning, and will roturu on Saturday. To-day he will accompany the mombers of tho French Mission to Longbeach, and tomorrow to Akaroa. The Rev. Frazer B. Barton, 8.A., who lias been on active service in Franco for eighteen months, has been appointed to the charge of the new Westmero parish, "Wanganui. Mr Barton was for a number of years Bibleclass organiser for the Presbyterian Church in New Zealand. Mr J. I. Fox, manager of the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Club, has given notico of resignation, as from the end of February. In a letter to tho chairman of the Clubhouse Society, Mr Fox states that ho intends visiting England, and cxpects to be away about six months. News has been received by Mrs "W. B. Cooke that her husband, Second-Lieut. "W. B. Cooke, has been awarded the Military Cross. Second-Lieut. "\Y. B. Cooke left with the Main Body as & private. He won the Military Medal for gallantry on Gallipoli, and later received a bar to the meaal for good work on the Somme. He is the eldest son of Mrs J . Cooke, 33 Haast street, Linwood.
Mr George Checkley, of Akaroa, has received a cablo message from his son Dallas, dated December 27th from Sowerby Bridge, stating that he has received his commission in the Royal Air Forces, and that lie is well. Lieut. Cheekley is the only Akaroa boy to to join the Aviation Corps. After his training at the flying school at Sockburn he left New Zealand in May and arrived Home in July. He first went to the Cadet wing of the R.A.F. at West Hill, Hastings, and then to the School of Aeronauts at Cheltenham. Tie was later attached to the Jutland Squadron of the R.A.F. School of Aeronauts at Oxbridge, and eventually went on to Sowerby Bridge, where he has now completed his course and received his commission.
