From prc-cent indications there is little prospect of an early settlement. Thorn are now Feven vessels held up. including tho Island steamer Lovuka. The position, so far as the Lnion Company is concerned, centrcs round the men's claim lor £1 per day. If they 'would waive this, any other little points involved could, it is stated, easily he overcome, and an early >t'ttlement reached. Tho r.tanager of the company eays ho has not (boon able to ascertain exactly what terms the mm want. In the "beginning they a»l:ed for bolter quarters, and these wore granted iliem. Thev then requested more pay, and finally JL".jOI> insurance. Under such circumstances, it -wcti impossible to doat with tho dispute. In the meantime tho company had sent a letter to the Seamen's Union, asking for a definite statement of claims. A meeting of the Transport Union discusscd the situation, and, it is(uuderstood, favoured tho seamen's demands. The Durham, which journeys via Brisbane; took over 0110 hundred New Zealand passengers, and tho Port Lyttolton about fiftj'. Tho Suovic ii? °xpocted to leave Melbourne via Hobart, for Auckland, some time this week.
