The Union Company's steamer Karamu, laden with cargo tiom Napier and Welling-. ton, is expected to put in an appearance at Lyttelton to-day. Kini, which ha 3 been on the Port Chalmers dock undergoing is expected to oome out to-morrow, when alio prepares for a voyage to Greymouth. Captain Stringer, of the Tofua, has charge of the Maori in place of Captain Williams, who has taken command of "the Tofua. Mr Coy to, second omcer of the Mararou, has transferred to the Maori in a similar capacity.
Mr _ Brigden, mate of the Waverley, is relieving Captain Fisk, master of .that vessel. Captain Fisk lfl on holiday leave, and Mr Jackson is acting as mate. Among to-morrow's expected arrivals in port are the Canterbury Shipping Company'® steamers Breeze and Calm, the former from Wellington, on route for Dunedin and Timaru, and the latter for Southern ports to load for Wellington and Wanganui. The schooner Lily was ready for departure from Lyttelton on Saturday, but owing to a shortage in her crew the vessel has been detained in port. The vessel has on board a load of produce and general cargo for Kaipara.
The Putiki is expected to arrive here on Thursday with cargo from Timaru. She will discharge at Lyttelton, and theu load for Wellington, sailing Thursday evening far the North, The Orepuki, which is discharging limber from the West Coast at Lyttelton, will afterwards load general merchandise for Greymouth, and is expected to take her departure for that port to-morrow. The steamer Opihi has commenced discharging her part cargo from Vancouver at Lyttelton. Upon completion here she will sail for Auckland, at which port, it is understood, the vessel will take in cargo for Genoa, Italy. No definite advice has been received locally regarding the date of the Monowai's expected arrival at Lyttelton from Northern ports, but she will probably reach this por* before Saturday. The Kauri is unloading a part cargo of wheat at Lyttelton, after which sho will proceed to Melbourne, sailing about Thu sday. The Kauri's officer® are:—Captain Bilton, Mr A. Inman (chief officer), Mr VV. Cadwallader (acting second officer). The vessel will probably load wheat at Melbourne i for Auckland. >
| The steamer John, laden with timber from Greymouth, arrived at Lyttelton yesterday morning. She left the West Coaat port on Friday evening. From this port she will proceed to Oamaru. The. collier Kamona left West port on Sunday, bound for Lyttelton. She is bringing a cargo of coal for discharge here, and should reach this port to-day. Captain £. Harris, master of the Union Company's steamer Waitomo, has gone a/ihore oil holiday leave and hi? position is being temporarily filled by Captain P. J. Fester. throughout that trip, is now 44 days out on passage from San Francisco to Auckland. The Kaitangata is due to leave Melbourne to-morrow with a general cargo for discharge at Wellington. The Canadian Robert Dollar Company, headed by Captain Eobt. Dollar, one of the most famous owners of merchant ships, will shortly establish a monthly mail steamship service between Vancouver and Hong 1 Kong, Shanghai, Manila, and Singapore. All hia ships are under Canadian or British, registry. LAUNCHING OP THE VALMAPJE. A big event in Hobart's history was the launching early last month of the threemasted schooner Valmarie, the largest vessel to be built in Tasmania. Some interesting details of the event are contained in a recent issue of the Taamanian "Mail." As the Valmarie is to make a voyage from a mainland port to San Francisco (says th© "Mail") she may be classed as a deep sea vessel, as distinguished from en intercolonial trader, and in that regard her launch is noteworthy, as it ia very many years since a deep eca vessel was built in Tasmania. Until che lias been measured by the Customs it cannot be said exactly what her tonnage is, but it is estimated that she will carry something like 400 tons of deadweight. She is the larjre3t vessel built in Hobart since the launch from the Domain yards of the barque Loon:«r.a in the year 1879. This vessel was trading between the Pacific Islands and Sydney until lost a few years ago. The next biggest vecsßl to. the Valmarie built at Battery Point wiu the barque Oceania (320 tons) constructed in 1876. This vessel waa lost in Cook Strait in MBS3. MOVEMENTS OF OVERSEA VESSELS.
