News has been' recoived of the death in hospital in France of Captain the Rev. Noel Elliot Hawdon, M.A., Chaplain to the ,Forces. ,The late Mr Hawdon came to New Zealand in 1912, being sent out by Canon Tuppor-Cary, ono of the missioners from England in 1910. He acted as master fit Wanganui College for a short period. As soon as Archdeacon Jacob was settled in Timam ho joined the clerical staff there', and in 1913 came to St. Michael's, Christchurch. He was a graduate of Cambridge University, and a member of the Leander Club. He was ninth man in his year when tho Eights were selected for the annual Oxford-Cam-bridge boat rare. He was an all-round athlete and a good musician. A great favourite amongst boys, lie was greatly miised by the Scouts of Timaru and Christchurch. Tho late Mr Hawdon, who had been on active service for several years, has relatives ' residing at Peel i'orest.
Mrs R. Juriss, Barctta street, Spreydon, has received word that her son, Armament-Quartermaster-Sergeant W. Juriss, will return home in about a fort-, night. Q.M.-Sergeant Juriss, who is well known in Christchurch as deputysuperintendent of .the. Fire Brigade, left with the Main Body. He has escaped' being wounded, but was gassed in France some time ago. Advice has been received, by Mrs J. A. George, Sea View road. New Brighton, that her son, Private J. T. George, who loft with the 40th Specialists, is returning home shortly. • ' Mrs L. Boiirk 18 Hutchison street, has received word that her 6on, Private Leonard Bourk, is returning to New Zealand shortly. Private Bourk before the war had been travelling for eight years and a half, and was referred to in the American papers as the "New Zealand Globe-trotter." On hearing that his. brothers had enlisted he came across to New Zealand from San Francisco, and joined up with the 13th Reinforcements, but had to undergo an operation, and eventually left with the <Joth Reinforcements. -He was wounded in the left thigh. Mrs Bourfs sons have a Temarkably fine reoord for this war. Five Jn number, they all went to the front, two of them, Albert and Edward, with the Main Body. Tho former was killed in Gallipoli, and Edward was wounded. •Going to France, he was wounded four more times, and gassed, and was ultimately killed? last April. Another son, James, left with the Ist Reinforcements, and arrived back $n leave last September, while still 4fiother, William, served in South Africa, and being in London when this war broke out, he joined the New Zealanders there, and is still serving as a motordriver.
Mr T. A. Innes, Rodney street, New Brighton, has been advisod that his son, Rifleman H. A. Innos, is returning home in a few days' time. Rifleman Innes, who left with the 2nd Battalion New Zealand Rifle Brigade, was gassed in August last. i Mr and Mrs John. R. Whitham, 158 Westminster 6treet, St. Albans, have received advice that their youngest son, Sapper J. P. Whitliam, of the Bth New Zeafihd Wireless Troops, is returning home, and will arrive in Now Zealand within the next fortnight. Advice has been received by. Mr AY. Lugg, of Springston, that his eldest son," Private William Lugg, has bo?n accidentally injured in the left leg. Private Lugg was born and educated at Springston, and on leaving school engaged in farm work. He left with the 32nd Reinforcements, being the last of three sons to leave for the front. On Sunday evening, the Rev. J. Harjis, of "Springston, conducted an in memoriam service to the late Rifleman Dan Everest. Considering the inclemency of the weather, the congregation was. good. The members of the IJ.AjO.D. Ethelbert Lodge were present to do 'honour to their late brother. Mr L. Blakemora contributed an appropriate solo, and Miss Henry, the organist, played the "Dead. "MaTch" at the "■close of tho service. Mrs J. Hvland, Havelock" street, Aishburton. has received advice from the Rev. Father Connolly, Chaplain to the Forces, that her son, Sergeant Frank Hvland, who -was previously reported missing, believed prisoner of war, is wounded, and a prisoner in Germany. Mrs W. T. Lill, Willowby, has been advised that her son, Eanco-Corporal Wilfred T. Lill, is returning to New Zealand shortly. Lance-Corporal Lill left with the Main Body, and has been right through the war without a break. Mrs Hanna (Saltwater Creek) has received cable advice that her husband, Private F. M. Hanna, is returning to New Zealand with Draft No. 204, whichi is due to arrive shortly. Advice has been received by Mrs Watts, of Disraeli street. Addington, that her son, Private V. (Vera) Watts, who left New Zealand with the 9th Reinforcements, is returning with an early' draft." Private Watts was wounded in the head, arms, and legs in France.
