FIGHTING SHIPS' SUPERIORITY. (By Cable.—Prees Association.—Copyright.) (Australian and N»Z, Cable Association.} WASHINGTON, January 2. Mr Daniels, Secretary of the Navy, says that the United States fighting ships now under construction are superior to those of other countries, because they are fitted with electrically-driven machinery. The New Mexico, the latest Dreadnought, develops 31,000 horsoEower, instead of tho contract of 26,090 orse-power, giving a speed of twentyone and a quarter knots, with exceptional coal eoonomy.
