WAR MEMORIALS.
[ TO THE EDITOR OF "THE THESS." Sir, —The triumphal arch mentioned! . in the correspondence column of your [ issue of tlio Ist inst. was erected by J\aL poieon himself to commemorate his vict tories and a reminder of his individual , greatness, together with some of Jus generals; also, I might add, of his greetl and ambition to rule tho world, with, as a result, the sacrifice of some of tli« best of tho French nation and the burden of supporting his descendants, until , the great French nation finally throw ; it. off. The mind of the artist of that " period is unsuitable to copy now, when a war has been waged for tho liberation, of the enslaved masses of Europe, and tho British, being the leaders of that great work, our thoughts now are — 1 what is to typify and immortalise those 1 lives given in this great work? If it be a looking into the past for a desigji for our monuments, let it ho to Egypt, where many of our boys find their long resting-place, and take for this purpose the Sphinx, which is the keeper of , the lion. Onr nation has long used tho lion as its symbol; now Ave should em- ; body the Sphinx with tho lion, and also the form of liberty. In this wo have . tyjfified life,, and liberty—truly a" fitting design when we think of tho ; millions speaking tho mother tongue who were engaged in. the battle for freedom.—Yours, etc., ___ OLD SOLDIER.
