LYTTELTON NEWS.
A PLUCKY RESCUE. A little trill of about seven years of :oe, ■whilst walking near the west end of Gladstone pier, yesterday', overbalanced and fell into the water. The mishap was witnessed by a young man named T. Wells, employed as a. shipwright at Lyttelton, and be immediately went to her assistance. A manwas etsndinp near by lowered «v rope, by •means of which the rescuer was able to sustain himself a-nd the girl until further assistance Arrived. A rope with a loop at the end was eventually used for lifting them from the water, after an immersion; lasting nearly twenty minutes. Wells showed signs of severe exhaustion upon regaining the wharf, but the girl appeared to to nono tho worse for the mishap. MAGISTRATE'S COURT. Messrs W. T. Lester and F. Knitjhts, J.P.'s, presided at the Lyttelton Magistrate's Court yesterday mornine. when a first offender was convicted and lined ss. Peter H. Kennedy, a nrem-m, was charged with having used ob6cene language. SeniorSergeant Jackscm stated that accused was one of the men who wes earnin? £4 a dav in the ferry service. He had a. wife and nve children. He was cowicted ana discharged, and a prohibition order was issued against him. THE HOLIDAY. Yesterday was observed as ft holiday in port, but comparatively few holiday-m'kers from the city arrived by tho early morning trains, this probably being due to the unpropitious weather of the previous day and to the cold southerly wind that prevailed yesterday morning. The launches yrere fairly busy in the afternoon conveying picnickers to the various bays.
