THE NATIONAL ANTHEM
AN EMPIRE VERSE. (FBOII OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) LONDON, Octobor 31. Tho absence of any allusion to th« Empire in the National Anthem prompted the Royal Colonial Institute through its journal, "United Empire," to invite suggestions for an "Empire Verse" which might prove suitable for incorporation ifl tho National Anthem. Publicity was givon to tho competition in the Press of Great Britain and tho oversea Dominions, and some four hundred competitors sent in verses. In the opinion of tho adjudicators, Sir Herbert Warren, K.C.V.0., D.C.L. (late Professor of Poetry at Oxford University), Mr Edmund Gosse, C.8., and Air Laurence Binyon, the following verse was the best offered Wide o'er tho linking feas, Polar and. tropic breeze, Our song Ehail bling. Brothers of each Domain, Bound but by Freedom's chain, Shout, as vour Sires, again— "Clod save the King!"
