HOLD-UP OF THE MAKCRA. FEARS OF GENERAL MOVEMENT AMONGST FIREMEN. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copytighi.) SYDNEY, January 2. It is believed in shipping circles that 10 claims of the crew of tho Makura arc an indication of a far-reaching general movement, as the firemen t-f the Loongann, at Melbourne, refused to man the vessel unless granted higher wages. RELIEF OF STRANDED NEW ZEALANDERS. PASSAGES IN CARGO STEAMERS. (Received January 2nd, 10.55 p.m.) SYDNEY, January 2. Arrangements havo been mado to take one hundred New Zealand passengers in tho steamer Durham, which will sail in a few days. Some are signing on as stewards and stewardesses. Eight berths on board tho steamer Port Lyttolton wero ballottcd for, thus relieving the most urgent cases. Several Now Zealand Ansacs are included among tho passengers who are to get away in these boats. As tho Durham calls at Brisbane, the Government has promised to assist fifty stranded New Zealand girls during her four days' 6tay there, and has telegraphed the Queensland Government to that effect.
