PAPANUI PEACE CARNIVAL.

GATHERING IX THE DOMAIN. Tho meteorologists who -prophesied yesterday's rain wore probably satisfied with tho weather, but the committed- of the I'apanui Pcaco Carnival, which took placo in the Domain yesterday, wore decidedly g.oomy over the probable financial results, and the secretary, Mr T. Woods, stated that they would bo lucky if they managed to clear nil expenses. Tho heavy rein in tho foicn'oc.i just camo at the wrong time, and hundred-, of people must have been deterred from attending tho fete by the threatening aspect of the wcathr. However, by 2 p.m. blue sky appeared, and tho aiternoon \vas_ delightful, and the fsirly largo concourse of people bold enough to brave the elements had a very pleasant outing. Tho proceeds of the carnival, ehould there bo any to divide, will go equally to the Y.M.C.A., the Salvation Aimy, and tho Fapanui Patriotic Fund. The chief items of attraction for the public during the- afternoon were ,1 sports programme lor aduks and juveniles, Highland rnusio and dancing, various stalis and sideshows, and laet, but not least, tho roasting of a bullock whole by the Maoris from the Tuahiwi pa. During the afternoon the Christcliurch Highland Pipe Hand provided an en joy abb programme of music. The bullock roasting -.van watched by hundreds of interested people, and this part oi the programme, was a. complete and undoubted success. The party of Maoris waa under the leadership oi Mr To Hau Kelly, and with him v.-ora Mes3ra Wi Barrott, Kuebeu, Teaika, Taiiiui, and Mokonioko, and Sergeant King, cf the Pioneers N.Z.E.F. Tho ladiea who took part in the "ceremony" wcro Mrs King, Mrs Teaika, Mrs Croft, and tho young 'wnhines of Tuahiwi. At the western end of the ground the big ov«n had been dug, and here tho bullock, split open, was cooked in tho good old Haori style. The carcase had been laid on netting on tha heated stones, and covered in with mats and earth, and punctually at three o'clock it was opened up. Tho Maoris worked hard at the uncovering, and clouds of steam and smoke, and a distinctly appetising odour arose from the oven. As the carcase was brought, to view Mrs King chanted an invocation in Maori to the huge amusement of tho crowd. When tho bullock, steaming hot, was laid on the boards mado ready tor it, Mr 1?. A. Patrick, chairman of the committee, cut the first slice, amid cheers, and then the Maoris 1 landed round helpings of the beef, on Has plates at 6d a time, over £3 being collected in this-way. Those who sampled the meat said tiiat it was excellently cooked, and tasted a great deal better tnan it looked. It had been intended to bring down a : party of poi dancers from Tuahiwi for tho afternoon, and the Maori ladies had been practising hard for this event, but unfortunately an unexpected hitch occurred in tha arrangements, and this interesting event could r.ot be etagea. The chairman stated to a "Press" representative that 'permission had been obtained from Mr S. A. Staples, chairman of the Waimairi County Council, for tho Council's motor lorry to bo •used to bring the poi paTty from Tuahiwi, but the engineer, on being applied to in the morning stated that, uo tlio lorry hau just been overhauled, ho could not see hi 3 way to allow it to be taken cut. Mr Patrick intended to get another convey aneo to gj out, but as it was raining heavily at the time, Mr Kelly thought it better to call the arrangements of. A very excellent ehow of Highland dancing and piping was given by a number of clever dancers and pipora during the. afternoon, tho judges for those events being Mr Fraser (dancing) and Mr Allan (pipe music}. Tho sports "were fairly well contested, soffio of tho fields being large, and tho finishes good. The stalls and side-shows, and those in chur tf o of them wcro as followsi- - Bostiill (Mr °L.
