Progress of the War.

The news from the West front to-day is distinctly good, indicating as it does that the Germans are making practically no progress in their latest drive. The various messages give such a comprehensive review of the position that little comment is called for. Tho most satisfactory feature of tho situation is the announcement that tho enemy has been held without the necessity of utilising any of thp French reserves, implying that the Allied defcnco is sound, and that their ability to hold the invaders is definitely established. On tho northern front activities are still confined to local raids and reconnaissances. Sir Douglas Hnig reports an enemy attack on the new positions at Hcbuterne, presumably those taken by the New Zealandcrs in the raid reported yesterday, but a counter-attack immediately restored the lino. On' the Italian front local fignting resulted in favour of the Allies. Following close on the dismissal of General Cadorna, the Italian ex-Commander-in-Chief, comes the announcement of the dismissal of the Chief of tho Austrian General, Staff, Marshal Conrad von Hoetzendorff, presumably owing to the recent disastrous failure of the Austrians in the Piave battle. 1a Albania the

French continue to make progress, a | communique from this front to-day an- j nouncing the capture of three more j villages on the right bank of the Devoli. | The messages relating to the situation in Russia throw little fresh light on j tho position. Further Bolshevik re- | verses are reported in a message from Peking, the Czecho-Slovaks forcing a ; retirement north-west of Vladivostock.
