FIRE IN CANTERBURY HOTEL. An outbreak of fire occurred early yesterday morning in the Canterbury Hotel, Lyttelton. The alarm was given by Constable Smith, who noticed smoke issuing from tho rear of the promises. The Fire Brigade was on the seen© a few minutes later, and the outbreak completely quelled within a quarter of an hour. Tho fire wai probably caused through somebody having switched on the current by mistake to an electric iron which was standing on the kitchen tab'e. _ J-'ha total damage is estimated at £10}, tho fire having damaged a table, a window, the partition dividing the kitchen from a passage, a portion of tho flooring, and a quantity of clothing. Mrs Reid, the licensee, and her family, wero sleeping in x dwelling adjoining the hotel. The building and tuwiiUire are insured for £2500. THE PICTURES. A Metro drama, "'The Trail of the Shadow," featuring Emmy Wehlen, and a further instalment of the serial "Who is 1? wero screened at the Harbour Light Picture Theatre yesterday. The same programme i will be repeated to-night. Showing at tomorrow's sessions will bo a Paramount Service film. "Little Miss Optimist," starring Vivian Martin. The supporting comprise a comedy entitled "O. U. Boat,' two ' Gazettes, and .a continuation of .Burton ; Holmes's Travel' Series. BOWLING CLUB. Tho annual meeting of the Lyttelton Bowling Club was held last evening. Mr C. H. Agar presiding. The balance-sheet showed that the club -was in a fairly satisfactory financial position. Tho receipts wero £148 j 12s, and the expenditure £187 3s Sd. The election of of&oers resulted as follows President, Mr W. Brown; vice-presidente. Messrs -£. H. Henderson, J. T. Norton, C. H. Agar, and W. T. Lester; pecretary, Mr J. Ij. wueon; trehaurer, Mr H. H. Barnard; general committee, Messrs D. Page, W. Taylor, J. D. Miller, J. Garrard, J. Mahar, D. Sinclair, J. Gower, MeAuliffe, and J. Young; . eolo selector, Mr S. Sinclair; delegate to the Centre, Mr E. H. Henderson; auditor, Mr J. Gower; green superintendent, Mr H. H. Barnard; match committeo, Messrs.C. 11. Atrar, D. Page. E. J. Young, end S. Sinclair. Mr F. E. Sutton, who is proceeding to the front this year, was accorded a voto of thanks for his valuable services as secretary. SENIOR CADETS. At the conclusion of the ordinary weekly parade of the No. 11 Company Senior Cadets last evening, a special parade took place m the drill hall, when tho result of the Anderson Challenge Cup, presented, every six I months for discipline and attendance, was j announced. On this occasion Corporal iiul and Private Clifford Whitford both fo ured. ! the maximum points. After careful consideration it was decided to present the cup jto Private "Whitford, Corporal Hill being 1 awarded an extra ftripe. Mrs F. "W. Anderi sot, after inspecting tho company, complimented the lads on their smart appearance. Major Conway, officer commanding the I group, Lieutenant Sampson, area officer, Mr iF. W. Anderson, Lieutenant Patterson, and Sergeant-Major Rich, instructor of the corps, were present. The lads wero addressed by Mr F. W. Anderson, Major Conway and Lieutenant Anderson.
