L. Rutherford (Macdonald Downs), who arrived-from -he North yesterday morning, are staying at "Warner's. Mr and Mrs J. Newton have returned to Christchurch after a visit to the North Island. The Hon. E. Mitchelson (Auckland) and Mrs Mitchelson have returned North after a short stay in Chrisv churcli. Mrs Hayhurst returned to Temufca yesterday. I Dt. and Mrs Davenport (Coalgate) arrived in town last night. Ibey a.c staying at the Federal. Mr and Mrs T. McNab (Auckland) are visiting Christchurch. Mrß Vincent is staying at the Federal. She was Assistant-Superior of Lewisham Hospital, Sydney, and Mistress of Novices. Nearly all tho Sisters at the local branch of the hospital were trained by her. About twelve months ago she came to Christchurch on a visit, and sho proposed to return to Sydney shortly. She was a very loveablo character, and beloved by Sisters and patients alike.

Tho engagement is announced of Miss Nellie Hindmarsh, sixth daughter of Mr and Mrs John Hindmarsh, Greenmeadows, to Captain Arthur Heale, R.A.M.C., son of Mrs H. Strachan, Poraite, Napier. The golden wedding of Mr and Mrs Joseph Townley, of Auckland, was oele-/ brated last week. They came to New Zealand in the early days, and went I through the stirring times of tho | rush at Thames. Mr Townley has been connected with the Auckland City Council for the past 32 years, being lug oldest sanitary inspector in its employ. In order to extend the usefulness of tho St. Helens Hospitals it has been decided by the Minister of Public ] Health (the Hon. G. W. Russell) to open an outdoor department for expectant mothers, when they may obtain advice on their condition and thus by timely treatment avert some of the dangerous complications of childbirth. It is not intended to restrict this advice to those women only who propose to enter St. Helens for confinement, but to all who may not be able, during the term of their prognancy, to afford medical advice. Patients of outside doctors will therefore be welcomed, and the co-operation of the medical profession is asked for to make the scheme a success. Tho St. Helens Hospitals arc intended to provide facilities for women of moderato means. Tift cost is at the rate of £1 per week whilst the patient is awaiting confinement, and £1 10s per week which covers medical assistance, nursing, and maintenance after the child is born. Expectant mothers are invited to visit the Home, situated at Durham street, Sydenham, and consult the matron and medical superintendent.

TO-DAY'S RECIPE. To Clarify Dripping.—Put a littlo water, just enough to cover tho bottom of the pan. Now put in the dripping, and let it slowly. melt over the turned down gas, stirring it frequently. When quite melted, pour it into *a basin, and leave for some hours to set firm, then remove the cake of fat, and scrape the undo'r side.
