MILITARY SERVICE BOARD.
CANTERBURY NO. 2. Tlie Second Canterbury Military Service Board eat in Ckrietchuich yesterday. Present—Mceara H. W. Bishop (chairman), M. G. Rich, and F. T. Eldridge. The application of Ebenezer Hay (Pigeon Bay) for a re-hearing of his appeal was refused. Bunting and Co. (Chris tchuxch) appealed on behalf of Joseph W. Alunt. They stated that they would have to close up their paint brush department if Munt were called up. This would bo serious to the Now Zealand Railways, the Defence Department, and the Union Steam Ship Co., whom they supplied. The appeal was referred to the Efficiency Board. The International Harvester Co. of Now Zealand, Ltd., applied for a re-hearing of its appeal on behalf of Charles Howarth Lewis, its sub-manager in Christchurch. The application ,waa granted, the chairman stating that the Board would go fully into the facts, and announce its decision later. The Board after consideration decided to dismiss the appeal, but to givo Lewis an extension of time from August 12th to October 7th. E. Reece, Ltd., appealed on behalf of'their managing director, Edward Thomas Reece. A sine die adjournment was granted. Dr. Erwin appealed on behalf of A. 0. W. Standage, Presbyterian minister, Fairlie. Dr. Erwin said the~ Presbyterian Church had 48 ministerial charges for which there were no ministers. Fourteen home missionaries were partly filling the breach, but the other 34 charges were working in various ways. Standage, who had been classed Cl, conducted services in five places in the Fairlie district, and also conducted service in; Mackenzie County. Dr. Erwin stressed the lack of ministers in the church, and pointed out that there were no students coming forward. A .sine die' adjournment was granted. . The Canterbury Central Co-op. Dairy Co., Ltd., appealed on behalf of its butter maker, Henry Samuel Whitham. A sije die adjournment was granted. The Christchurch Drainage. Board appealed on behalf of Wm. Arthur Worefold, in ' charge of iGj river cleaning gang. Tho Board stated that it would be extremely difficult to replace Worefold, and it was essential that the rivers and streams should be kept cleaned. A sine die adjournment was granted. The Riccarton School Committee applied ' for an extension of time till the end pf tho year for Robert Henry North, assistant master At the school. Mr Bishop pointed out that the Board of Education had refused to appeal on behalf of the teachers, yet a local school committee was asking the Military Service Board to go behind the Education , Boanl. The Board decided to give North leave till November 2nd. Tho Nugget Polish Co., Ltd., appealed on behalf of its manager, Wm, Edward Elsom (Christchurch). The appeal was adjourned till the end of November, to see how Elson's brother Thomas fared in camp A sine die adjournment was granted William Hough (Waitangi), but the chairman said the Board was going to review the whole question of granting exemption to Chatham Islanders. ' . _ W. H. Price and Son, Ltd., appealed on behalf of William Tooth, who was stated to be solely engaged in the manufacture of milking machines. A sine die adjournment was granted. The New Zealand Shipping Co. appealed on behalf of William Watßon (Sumner), employed in its service as foreman stevedore. A sine die adjournment was granted. A sine die adjournment was also granted Robert Percy Hunter (Christchurch), a marine engineer. John William Sheohan, a member of Class C, announced that he wished to abandon his appeal, and go into camp on October 7th, the date he 1 had been ordored to. The appeals of the following were dis--1 missed:—Thotaas Samuel Wilson (Christchurch), Frank Sparks (Halswell), Peter Whyte (Weedons), and Waitei Philip Yardley (Christchurch). There being no appearance of the follow- [ ing, their appeals were dismissed:—Arthur ' Jones (Christchurch), Arthur Soanes (Christchurch). An application by the mother of Alfred E. Sinclair, on service, for his return on' furlough to New Zealand, was refused. Leave of absence was granted a£ follows: August 26th—Leslie H. N. Shave (Christchurch). '
j September '9th—James Bell (Ladbrooks). October 7th—James Rt D. Johns (Belfast), George Bockwith (Christ-church), Edgar i Wilson (Christchurch). I October 21st—Charles Were (Christchurch), David Mackie (Tetnpleton). The following having been medically classified C 2, their appeals weje adjourned sine die:—Arnold W. Judd (Aiaioa), Prank B. Stenhouse (Christchurch), Hy. A. L. Vale . (Christchurch), W. Leonard Walker (Christ- ) church), Peter C. Walsh (Christchurch), Albert E. Wenlock (Weedone), Thomas Wilkinson (Christchurch), Henry Worrall (Christ- ' church), and Arthur E. Wright (Christ- ( church).
