Progress of the War.

Comparatively little fighting appears to have taken place on the West front in the period covered by to-day's cables, and such operations as are recorded are mostly in the nature of Allied raids and local attacks. The recent French attacks in the Sommo area were apparently of more importance than the brief cabled reports indicated, and, according to a message to-day, the position at Amiens is decidedly stronger as a result of them. The Germans have now, apparently, lost all the vantage points which they held in this sector, and have now no direct observation into Amiens. On the Lys battlefront the Germans appear to be also suffering from their lack of high ground, the Allies ceaselessly harassing theii lines with gun fire, involving a constant drain on their man-power. In Albania the Italians, assisted by the French, continue their advance, making steady progress towalds Elbasan, their next objective. The news from .Russia records no outstanding developments in tho-situation, though the various messages show clearly that the landing of large Allied forces on- the Murman coast is an event of the first importance, and one which may ultimately lead to the regeneration of Russia.
