MEETINGS AND SOCIALS.
ST. JOHN AMBULANCE. The Christchurch Division of tho St. John Amb'jianro Brigade held its fortnightly meeting on July Sth, Miss Mills, lady superintendent, presiding. Members, after demonstrating uses of the triangular bandage, wcro tested in "First Aid" by Mr Thomas, disttrict superintendent. OP AW A SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At the monthly meeting of the Opawa School Committee, the headmaster's report for the quarter ending June showed that 18 new pupils had been admiit-d, nnd 21 had left. The roll number was 360 and the average attendance 330. From reports it appeared to tho committee that pcesiblv only two rooms of the proposed new tchool wore to be erected, and it was decided to enter an emphatic protest urging that the building should be completed in its entirety. PIGEON FETING CLUB. A meeting of tho Canterbury Pigeon Flying Club was held in the Club's rooms, Manchester 6treet, on Saturday evening. Mr F. D. Wilson presided. It was reported that ICO entries had been received tor tho combined show of the Canterbury Pisjeon Flying Club and the United Club, which is to be held next Saturday. It was decided to have on exhibition SO of the homing pigeons that are to be eent to France for service at the front. LINWOOD SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At the last meeting of the Linwood School Committee correspondence was received from tlie Education Board recommending Miss D. M. Bre-.vina for appointment as assistant mistress. The recommendation wa3 approved. It was agreed to hold Arbor Day on August 9th. It was decided to hold a cuehre party and dance in aid cf the Red Cross and school funds. The headmaster reported that tho average attendance was 557, out of a roll number of 705. Tho pupils are still contributing to I'cd Cross work. Messrs Wilson and Phillips were appointed a Visiting Committee. During the meeting a deputation from the Lnwood Citizens' Association waited on the committee, and asked its assistance hi the Copper Trail. It was agreed that a meeting of all concerned be held in the echool to consider the matter.
WAIMAIRI BURGESSES' ASSOCIATION.
The Waimairi and West Brighton Burgesses' Association held its monthly meeting on Thursday last, Mr A. 1?. Blank presiding . over a large attendance. Mr E. C. Batluirsb was elected bon secretary in succession to Mr J. P. Whatman, who is leaving with an early reinforcement. It was decided to thank the Waimairi County Council for agreeing to the formation of Beach road. Messrs Barker and Stnnden were appointed to wait on tho Waimairi County Council and the New Brighton Borough Council respectively in reference to a- requisition area for Beach road. Messrs A. It. Blank, W. Poiseti, J. P. Whatman, B. B. Wood, and 12, C. Bat-hurst were appointed a sub-committee to define a requisition area. The secretary was instructed to write to the New Brighton Council asking them to furnish Mr Whatman with 'tho requisition ready for signature for Esplanade road and Berry street.
SUMNER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. Services celebrating tho fifth anniversary of the Sumner Presbyterian Church Sunday ■school were held in the church yesterday. Tho preacher in the morning was Mr J. S. Pate, missioner for the district, who preached from MatUiew 21 and 22, "All things whatsoever ye snail ask in prayer, believe, and yo shall receivc." Mr Hugh McLeod sang "Be Thou Faithful Unto Death," and the children gavo "Hail the Children's Festal Day." In the evening the service wa3 conducted by Mr A. C. Fleming. Tho soloist was Mrs W. G. Mason, who sang "O, Jesus Thou Art Stands ing," the children's hymn being "Rest, O Best at Eve Thy Children's Voices." Splendid congregations attended both services, and tho whole of the collections were to the Sunday school funds.
