PERSONAL NOTES
The following letter has been . received by Mrs J. Kermode, Hataitai,
Wellington, from Captain W. H. Jones,
N.Z.F.A. regret to have to write to
you giving tho sad news of tile death
in action of your son, Gunner Berfc Kermode. Yotrwill doubtless have already had the sad news by cable. He was killed in his sleep at 4.30 a.m. on April 18th. We sant his body to the rear, and he now lies buried in < lie military cemetery at Remy. He wa3 verv popular in the battery boo 1 ! wit'i officers and men, and was one of the most obliging and willing fellows one could meet. He was fearless, too, and was a credit to the force. We all very greatly regret losing bun. Please accept, my very deepest sympathy and also that of the officer?. n.c.o.'Sj and men of the sth Battery.' Private Leslie L. Martin, who died in the Second London Hospital from wounds received in France, was j,he elder son of Mr Thomas L. Martin, of Christchurch, but was brought up by his grandparents (Mr and Mrs R. Martin, of Roslyn). He attended tho school and later on tho Boys' High School. At the time he enlisted he was farming in Central Otago. Although only a little over 18 years of ago. he passed and went into camp, and left with tlifi 16th Reinforcements. Since the end of November, 1916, he had been in France, and came througn quite Safely until April 26th, when he was wounded and admitted to hospital on April 30th and died from his wounds on July 4th.
