HOCKEY.

CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION.

After a fortnight's spell, the Canterbury Hockey Association's competitions were continued on Saturday, in splendid wcatlior, but the grounds were heavy and soft. Results : — TECHNICAL (2) v. SYDENHAM (0). Sydenham were handicapped in the first spell by the absence of Patrick from the forward line, but the opening stages of the game were fairly even,. and the play was fast, considering the nature, of - the ground. Both teams had their opportunities of scoring, but did not take advantage of. them, and the first epell ended with'no score on'either side. Sydenham attacked strongly on resuming, and Holland just missed with tho shot. The Greens broke away, but Heaton shot wildly. Morris headed a forward run, and passed to Gracie, who netted with a good shot. Holland and Duflield were prominent in a forward run, which looked likely, but Moreton saved well, and set the Technical forwards attacking, and Ford netted a second goal shortly before time was called. Mr H. Hatch was referee. SELWYN (2) v. CRANFORD (0). Cranford and Selwyn met at Sydenham, and an even game was seen from start to finish. For some, time after the opening-bully neither side could claim to have the better of the play, and although the Selwyn front lino showed tho better combination, the Cranfoid backa were equal to tho task, and it was only

the chancoa given by the two penalty corners that enabled H. Bell to notch, the two goals registered before half-time was sounded. C ran ford' inado • desperate efforts to equalise in the second spell, but E. Smith and B. Morris were good on Oefenoe, and kept the goal intact. Soper played the beat immo on the ground, and cut out the Selwyn forwards time after time. Selwyn won'by 3 goals to nil. Messrs R. Rankin and P. Ryde were referees. SECOND GRADE. Chris tchinch drew with Bible Class, each side scoring 3 goal a. Sydenham defeated Selwyn. by 9 goals to 1, THIRD GRADE.' Oxford terrace drew with Sydenham, each scoring. 3 goals. Technical B. defeated Cranfoifl B. by 5 goals to 1. FOURTH GRADE. Technical defeated Chris tchurch. by 3 goals to 1. Sydenham defeated Oxford terrace by 3 goals to 1. LADIES' MATCHES. I SENIORS. j i Digby'a defeated Teelinical by i goals to 0. < I Wharenui defeated Sydenham by 6 goals lo 1. Ngaio defeated Oxford torraco by 5 goals to 1. I JUNIORS. Digby'o defeated Sydenham by 4 coals to 1. Ngaio defeated Gilby's by .7 goals to 1. NOTES AND COMMENTS. Saturday's games brought the second round of the senior competition, to an end, and Selwyn. are still unbeaten, with 10 points, while Technical are 8, so that with another round to go there is a posisibility of Selwyn being • beaten, as the other teams are improving; arid, there was not much to choose between Selwyn and; Cranford on Saturday. Selwyn were without Hay and Woodfield, which may havo made a difference, but as the goals were the outcome of comers in both cases it- is scarcely likely Woodfield would have made a great difference in the forwards. In the backs Evans, Smith,"and Robb all played sterling games, and Cranford were unablo to score at all. • Sydenham appeared to havo all tlie bad luck as numerous shoto at goal just mis3ed tho net. Holland put in some good runs up the left wing, and centred well, l>ut the shots were either stopped or someone slipped. The Technical team are improving, and played with better combination.

CANTERBURY v. OTAGO. The following team has been selected to represent Canterbury at Dunedin on July 27th: Goal, R. Templeto'n; .backs, right J. Soper, left J. Moreton; halves, right B. Morris,
