CANTERBURY RUGBY LEAGUE. The seven-a-side tournament was_ concluded at Sydenham Park on Saturday, tlie weather being favourable, though tho turf had no» recovered from the recent rain, and the grouwa in some parts was slippery, and _ hampered the players. There were some fine games witnessed, and the spectacular play was appreciated by the large crowd along the touchlines. The success of the Federal team in tlie final oLthe senior division was very popular, and the Federal captain, W. J. Mitchell, who was down from camp on leave, received a great ovation from tho spectators when he gained the team's final win. The Yollow and Blacks' success was deserved, ae they played combined football, and though in each of their games their opponents paid spccial attention to Mitchell, the latter cleverly frustrated these plans by keeping his confrere* in possession of the ball, and C. Kruse, t. Weeton, L. Thackwell, and W. Fletcher showed fine form. The tackling of both teams in tie final was first-class. In addition to tho Federal players mentioned, Stewart, Pitt, S. Smith, F. Sales, and A. Bench, for Hornby,

performed well. _ _ • The second division ended in the success of the crack Addington backs, who all showed a fiDe turn of speed, and their passing and fielding were of a high class. The Avon tcim, who were beaten in the final, put up a fine performance, and they possess eomo good playcre.

Woolston gained a popular win in oecarinß the third division series, after a fino game against Linwood. The latter, a much lighter team, showed the better knowledge of the game, and were unfortunate in getting beaten by a penalty goal, as in the extra spells played tho Linwood boys lost a capital chance by their centre hanging on too long. The various games and the physique pf the players ingagod in the competition created a favourable impression, and the general opinion expressed was that with so many • promising plaj-ers the code should have a very successful career.

Some of the most popular fixtures won) those in which the younger playora were engaged, and the fourth division series brought out some promising members. The success of "Woolstem A was very papular, and all

'vlit is due to L." Watson, who gave a solid | display for tho winners, and was on tho ball • all the way. J The executive had a very sucweaful tournament, and are to be commended, as tho games followed in quick succession, and several of the fixtures exceeded the time limit. Following were tho results:— SENIORS. Federal beat Sydenham by 5 poiirte to nil in tho semi-final.- W. Mitchell scored and C. Kruso converted. CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. The final match in the Senior League Competition was played on- Saturday in excellent weather. There was a fair attendance at English Park. Results:— OLD BOYS (4) v. ST. ALBANS (2). St. Albans kicked oft and made ground on the right wing, but Randall returned play, and Old Boys forced a corner, which proved abortive. Audibert kicked well down and Mahan narrowly missed scoring. Old Boys came back, good combination enabling-Dow-ker to open the score with a fast drive. St. Albans now attacked strongly and forced Old Boys on the defensive, and from a scramble in front of goal Farmar equalised. Even play followed, but the Saints gradually forced their opponents back and Mahan eventually gavo them tho lead with a fast drive. Tho kick saw Old Boys attacking. ' Norman ccntred accurately to Dowker, who, from short range, again made the scores level. , On resuming, Old Boys were the first to ' get going, and a likely shot from Dowker was intercepted by Faas. Play returned to midfield. Norman and Binning, with neat passing, mado ground for Old Boys and after drawing the opposition the former scored a fine goal from a difficult angle. St. Albans now took a hand and Bruoo tested ' Bennett with a good shot. Old Boys, how- . ever, gradually assumed the upper hand, and i Woods sprinting down tho lino in good > style, passed in to Dowker, who had no ■ difficulty in finding the net. The whistle I went shortly afterwards with play in St. 1 Aibans territory, Old Boys winning by 4 E | goals to 3. Mr P. Gill was referee. JUNIORS. Excelsior beat Western by 3 goals to 1. Shaw, Gillespie', and Lawrence scored for tho winners and Hoy for tho losers. Mr W&rdell was referee. THIRD GRADE. ' Excelsior defeated Western by 9 goals to c nil. Silvester (3), McLeod (4), Johns, and j Muir were the scorers. Mr Davey was j referee. I FOURTH GRADE. 1 St. Albans 7 v. Holy Trinity nil. Telegraph 5 v. OJ.C. nil.

Boys' Gordon Hall 7 v. Froggitt s Boy Scouts nil. Strange's 1 v. Melrose 1. NOTES. There was only one match played in the Senior Competition on Saturday, and as it had no bearing on tho result of the competition little interest was taken in the game. Neither Old Boys nor St. Albans were at full strength, and at no time did the football- reach a high standard. On tho play Old Boys .were easily .the better team,_ and had they desired could have won by a bigger margin. Norman made the opposition look cheap with some exceedingly ciever footwork, and was easily the best man _ on tho field.. The slippery ground made it difficult for the, players to control the ball, and miflkicks were frequent. St Albans showed voij little combination and tho fine forward rushes seen earlier in the season wcro conspicuous by their absence. Watson was badly missed from the forward line, where his fast paoe and strong shooting would probably have been a deciding factor in the ultimate issue of tho game. Old Boys were mtfch superior in all departments of tho game than their opponents, but did not inluse much life into their play. Bennett found , tho greasy ball not to his liking, and badly misjudged a. shot from Mahan during the first spell.
