THE FALLEN AND WOUNDED.

PERSONAL NOTES

News was received by Mrs Fitch, of Dallington, on Wednesday, regarding the death from wounds of her son, Lieut. R. D. Fitch, who left with the Machine-Oun Section of the 24th Reinforcements on April 24th, 1917. On arrival in France Lieut. Fitch was posted to the 2nd Canterbury Battalion. Lieut.-Colonel - Stewart writes as follows: —"I have just Heard with the greatest sorrow of the death of your gallant son, Lieut. Fitch, in the 46th clearing casualty station, from the effects of a shrapnel bullet in the head. He was wounded in the front trench on April 27th. Your son had been with us some time, and won the greatest liking and respect of us all. He was particularly keen on machine-gun work, and was at one time anxious to transfer to the Machine-Gun Battalion, but I could ill afford to spare such, an excellent officer, and induccd him to stay on with the battalion. Ho will now be sorely missed, and especially by his old company. lam glad to say he suffered very little pain, and died a peaceful death. I trust very earnestly that the • thought that he gave his life for a good cause, and .that his many fine qualities were keenly appreciated by us all, will help in some degree to console you in your loss'. With my deebest sympathy." Mrs Fitch also received very kind letters of sympathy from the chaplain of the officere' hospital, 46th casualty clearing station, and from the Sister in charge. Sister Gedye.
