CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.
The fortnightly social pthering of tho Canterbury Caledonian Socicty, held last night in the Society's rooms, was largely o.ttonaed, and ivm presided over by Mr C. S. Thomas, the president. Tho programme, for which Messrs W. Fxaeor and H. H. Rankin were responsible, was a bright and varied one. Songs wero given by Mesdames Poarco and R* ll* Rfl-nltin, Misgcs Clark and Knowlos, and Messrs H, Mcleod and Biaoey Wilson, and Misses Clark and Partridge gave a duct; recitations v/ere given by Mrs H. McLood and lire Hindle; Miss 'Waugh contributed '.a pianoforte . eolo; Miss Sheila Fraser danced the' Highland Fling, • Misa Clara Mcintosh tho sword dance, and a reel was dancod l>y C. Mcintosh and 8. FraSor, and Messrs W. Fraeer and J. A. Fr-asor. Selections -wore given by the Pipe Band. '
WALTHAM SCHOOI/ COMMITTEE. . At the monthly meeting of the Waltham School Committee the headmaster reported, that the average attendance was 583, and the roll number 716. Miss A. Lucas wrote resigning her position, and. the eecrotary was instructed to write to her expressing appreciation of her valuable eervioes whilst at tho school. Tho question of coal supplies was leit in the hands of tho chairman. Mesaia Harvey ( Forde, and Mortlock wero appointed a Visiting Committee.
TRINITY CHURCH. An excellent concert was given in Trinity Hall on Monday by tho Bugiy"street Methodist Choir, under the leadership of Mr Simpson. There was a good attendance. The prooeeds were devoted to tho pjirohaeo of trench comforts for the men of tho church on active service. l'ho part eongs by the choir woro a featuro of the evening, and reflected credit on all oonce,roed. The numbers given were: "Anchored, "The Cuckoo,!' "True to Death," "Moonlight," "A Spring Song," "Tho Village Blacksmith," arid "Men of Harleoh." Solos were _ contributed by Missos G. Thompson, Partridge, Mrs Henry, and Messrs E. Edgar and 11. Hindie, a duet by Misses Patrick and Nieholls, and elocutionary items by Mrs W. HincLle. At- the conclusion of the concert the members of Trinity choir entertained the performers.
LINWOOD BtTRGESSES' ASSOCIATION. The Lin wood Burgesses' Association met on Tueeday, M"r W. J. Roberto presiding over a good attendance. Mr T. S. Dacre cd that both the Tramway Board ana Ui® City Council had agreed to acoept a strip oE land to round off the south-oast oornor of tno intersection of Caehel street and Starnnore road, and tho work was being put in. handIt was arranged that a complete inspection of the district should be mado to aeoertun any plaoes where etreets woro insufficiently lighted. It was agreed to assist tho Lady Liverpool Trench Comforts Fund, and that a joint meeting of School Committor -ajod .Burgesses' Associations th® Liiiwoodf Avonaido, and Bromley districts bo convened to arrange a. campaign.
SHIRLEY SCHOOL COMMITTEE; At tho monthly meeting of the Shirley School Committee correspondence was received from the Bbard of .ciducatioa, stating that it could not give any more trees for planting to schools. It was resolved;that Hise D. Turner's appointment as assistant ■ mistress be approved. The caretaker's resignation was received and accepted. Tho matter of the heating apparatus was ', lolt in the hands of the chairman. It woe decided to hold a euchre party and dance in aid of the school funds. The headmaster. reported that the. average attendance, wua' 305, and for the June quarter 403.
ST. ALBANS-LIBRARY. Tho fiftieth annual mooting .of_ ih®, subecribors of tho St. Albans Publio Library luid Improvement Association waa held on Monday ? Mr W. J. Dangerfiifld presiding. The ' committoeo's roport showed that; good progress bad been made, and a considerable number of new books added to tho ehelwe.. It had boon necessary to increase tho shelving and floor space, and better facilities hod, been provided for the iseuo of books, resulting in a larger circulation than formerly, and also an increased number of subscribers. A new eito had been- acquired Colombo etreot north for- the erootion of a. moro oommodious library. Tho following officers were elected:—President, Mr W. J. Dangerfield; Mr R. J. Ecroyd't hon. secretary, Mr H. E, Powell; hoh. treasurer, Mr J. Joweoy; librarian, Mr A. Knight; committee, Messrs J. Beanland, B. Mooro, W. Pearoe, J. Hathaway, J, Lorunar, W.
