Applegarth (Auckland) has been appointed to a captain's commission in the American Red Cross and is stationed at present in Paris. Captain Applegarth was in tho Lanus and (survey Department in Auckland and came to England in 1916 for war work. George Spearman-, N.Z.E.F., was defeated by Pte. Digger Evans, at the Nat ! onal Sporting ! Club. Evans, who crouched a great deal, looked much tho smaller, but he j proved very difficult to land on. Cook, D.5.0., Wellington Regiment (Marton), who died, of cerebro-spmal meningitis at Netley Hospital, took place at Reading, where his wife lives. It was conducted by the Rev. F. J. Howard, and the Rev. C. E. O'H. Tobin, C.F., in St. Luke's Church, where tho deceased officer was married only six months ago. Full military hono.urs wero accorded, tho firing party, buglers and gun-carriage being supplied by the iM.Z.E.F. McCormick, and a party of V.A.D. nurses from St. Luke's Hospital. Tho Jate Major-General R. H. Davies's son, A.-Capt. H. C. Davies, R.E., left New Zealand with the Wellington Rcgt. in the Main Body, and got his discharge from the N.Z.E.F. in Egypt in April, 1915, for an Imperial commission. This' he obtained in tho "Roval Engineers, and became at once Orfierly Officer to his father. He was promotod Lieut, in October, 1916, and Acting-Captain in April of the following year. „ Lieuts. J. 11. and G. H. Gngg (Christchurch) havo transferred from the North Irish Horse to the Rojal Field Artillery, in which another brother already holds a commission. Lance-Corporal A. J. Burton, who was capturcd by tho Germans on the j Western front in August last year, has 'reached England on repatriation. Cori poral Burton, who comes from Taraj dale, Hinvke's Bay, and belonged to the • 2nd Battalion, Wellington Rgt., roi ceived a very severe wcund in the head, , a bullot going in through tho top of tho skull and out at the back. He i was taken to a German hospital in Belj gium, and by good fortune, tho Ger- ■ ! man military doctors took a very keen ! interest in his case. Burton was at first quite paralysed, but ho underwent several operations, and eventually began to make a recovery. His chief ; trouble then was lack of food, but the i parcels from the New Zea and Prisoners of War Department in London com- ■ rnenced to reach him, and before returning to England he put on four stono Tn weight. He has now almost recovered, the chief trace of his injury beinc paralysis of one foot. Even this, ° it is hoped, before long to euro. Corporal Burton is in King George s i Hospital, London. Liverpool Rgt., have been appointed General Staff Officers Cl.l. Capt. St. J. A. M. . Tolhurst, N.Z.M.C., was killed by a shell coming right into the dug-out which was being used as an aid post. A fellow officer says ho had shown remarkable heroism some two weeks before during the course of a stunt. His devotion to duty on that occasion was much eulogised by those present although the concussion of falling shells put out tho lights. "He went about his work with a quiet heroism that was an inspiring example to us all." With him in the aid post was the Rov. A. Allen, C.F., who was also killed. News has been received that 2ndLieut. D. G. Laurcnson (Cavalry S.R.) is a prisoner. He was formerly R.S.M. in the Canterbury M.R., and was discharged from the N.Z.E.F. in January last year for an Imperial commission. Tho Royal Humane Society has awarded testimonials to 23-748 Rifleman C G. Fearon and 12-534 Private F. R. I Ellis,*. Auckland ltgt., for gallantry- m | saving the life of an Australian soWier, who got into difficulties while bathing in Sierra Leone harbour. Tho incident occurred when a transport was there in November last. Although darkness was setting in and the harbour was known to bn infested with sharks, Fearon and Ellis imiEed ately plunged in on hearing _ the soldier s crios. Fearon -reached him and aided him until boats arrived and picked the j three of them up.
