IN offering my services aa a Member of j tho Education Board, it is with a view of pressing urgent reforms in the manner of government by tho Board, and moreover with tho Education Department. I Tho Teaching Profession must bo better paid. lam quite sure that lam putting it mildly by eaying that our great secular educational system ia half starved. I consider it a grave injustice to our national manhood to stuff and cram our young children for the first three or four years, and at the age of li allow the child to roam at will and forget everything. The people of this Dominion, to be selfcontained and maintained, must be alive to their interest. There can be no eano reason why child labour should commenco so early, there are exceptions, of courec, of physical disability that must be allowed for, nevertheless, every male child ahquld be compelled to attend secondary instruction, whether apprenticed to trades or ptberwise, and every branch of science must be brought within the reach of all, rioh and poor alike. In the matter of management of Schools.— I have no hesitation in saving that plenty of Eood men and women absolutely shun School Committeo work, they will not submit to the in'lignitios of tho office—bagging for n» thing And pleading for the other. Can there be anything more absurd than to invite a Committee to take office under such o skinflint method, whero tho capitation perhaps will only just barely pay for the cleaner. Tho Board roust consider a more adequate allowance to Committees; they must consider the urgent need of a more up-to-date system of heating the Schools, and give greater attention to sanitary arrangements. The BoavJ should also realise that Committees are elected by parents and residents, and tlioy aro entitled to liavo their requests attended to -without repeated reminders. ( I am. Yours faithfully. I F. G. NORTON, 4777 Lyttelton.
