OVERTURNS

The Illinois river excursion steamer Columbia had 663 passengers and 30 of a crew when she capsized. It is estimated that between 75 and 100 perished. In a dense fog the vessel struck a sunken log in the river and commenced to sink immediately. She then capsized. She was a three-decker. The excursionists wore dancing and singing when the accident occurred. A panic onsued, and many women and children were pushed overboard, while many jumped. Thero was no time to use the lifebelts or boats. The shrieks of the Burvivors were heard from the shore. Row boats were launched af.d went to the rescue. Julv 9th, 8 p.m.) PEORIA, July 8. Approximately 150 people perished in the wreck of the Columbia.
